I’m seriously considering a trial of amitriptyline. Does anyone have any advice regarding starting dose, titration, and effective dose based on their experience?
Thanks!

Hi
Ami pretty easy drug for me. Started at 5 mg and worked up to 20 mg. It really helped my mood and stopped daily headache right away. Didn’t help my dizziness though, so I moved on to Cymbalta. I eased off 5 mg at a time no problem. It didn’t really make me that tired either… Not like Remeron which kicked me to zzzz land in half hour.
Good luck!
Oh btw have you already trialled nort?
Kelley
wow kelley your dizziness is gone for most part on Cymbalta? that makes me want to try that if i can’t get any relief from celexa.

No, I haven’t trialed Nortriptyline. I’m looking at Ami because it has shown better effectiveness for at least some of my health concerns. Fortunately, I haven’t had persistent vertigo for quite a while now. I have multiple diagnoses, which I think are all somehow related to an imbalance of some sort. I’m not convinced all the diagnoses are legitimate but may instead be one and the same. Either way, Ami is a treatment option for each.
I’m hoping the Ami will help me sleep at night without making me drowsy the next day. I’m also hoping I can avoid the weight gain.
Marci,
I found Amy quite easy to tolerate at low dose (unusual for me). In fact, I still keep some in the cupboard if I have not had any sleep for days as it works wonders to help me sleep.
The first trial on it was several years ago and I started at half of a 10 mg tablet at night and slept right through. I took it for 3 months and couldnt get above three quarter of a 10 mg tablet without being too drugged the next day. By 3 months I noticed I wasnt so dizzy in the mornings, but I was getting hangover heads from it.
Recently tried it for 5 days and got depression from it which went as soon as I stopped.
I suffer with severe insomnia and this is one of the only things that works for me to give me some sleep.
Hope it works for you.
Christine
Christine,
Have you tried Remeron? That is the best for sleep…really awesome. Google it and you will see that it has a lot of good things to offer…weight gain can be a problem, but I only needed 5mg (usual starting dose 15mg), and I think when you are using it mostlyl for sleep, you don’t need to go higher.
Chris,
They Cymbalta for me has been the best so far, but I have to take Klonapin (like Valium) to get to 90% normal. Otherwise, I still have my visual “off” lightheadedness. The Klonapin knocks it out pretty well.

Take the Ami a few hours before bed…it won’t make you sleepy right away (like Remeron) and then you won’t be so “hungover” with fatigue the next day. I, too, was rx’s Ami of Nort for sleeping issues. I really found that taking melatonin 3mg time release capsule, and 5htp before bed was the best for regulating my sleep patterns. I was taking prescription pills to sleep and didn’t like having to have yet another medication in my arsenal. Sleep not really an issue anymore, but it was a rough time for almost a year.

Thanks Kelley,
Have never tried that one, nor ever been offered it? Is it used as a preventative for migraine as well or is it just to help the sleep issue?

It is an antidepressant and it worked great for me for a while, then pooped out. It is good for anxiety as well. Easier to get off of than most. But for sleep it rocks. You’ll have half hour window before zzzzzz land express!!
Try it!! I had no side effects.
