How Long before my antibiotic kicks in for a sever infection caused by a toothache? I am currently taking 2000 MG of penicilian and Vicodin for the pain. I went to the er for this. I can barely open my mouth I cant chew and my ear and neck area are all swollen. I have been on the antibiotic for 48 hours and the pain is just as bad as when it started.

I have had this problem at least 3 times. The severe pain ramps down somewhat about 4 days into the med for me. Sometimes it doesn’t until the tooth is removed or root canaled. If you got a few days and the pain is still unbearable, try asking to switch the antibiotic. I had good luck with Keflex 500 mg. 3 times a day for a week and once I got the root canal done, the pain was gone.
