Combining Effexor and Amitriptyline

I’ve been on Effexor for awhile now as a preventative, but my migraines have worsened in recent months. I tried increasing the dose to no avail, so my GP has suggested adding 10mg of Amitriptyline at night. Any input on the following would be much appreciated:

  1. Has anyone heard of combining the two drugs
  2. What is the standard therapeutic dose of Amitriptyline?
  3. What is the likelihood of side effects at 10 mg? I’m undergoing a major life change shortly and don’t want to have to deal with them

I have not heard of combining Effexor and Amitriptyline but if your doc thinks so it must be ok. 10 mgs is the usual dose for migraine prophylaxis.
Here is the dosage chart for various conditions -

Max dose is 300 mgs.

Yes, they can be combined. This is also true with SSRIs.

I posted a link recently to the John U Adleman talk. He discusses this. It would really be worth everyone’s while to put some time aside and have a listen to his talk.
