How much magnesium/day is recommended for migraines?

One 12 week study with 81 patients found that 600 mg of magnesium daily reduced migraine frequency by 42%, and also reduced the severity, drug usage and duration of acute attacks.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) reduced headaches in a trial given at 3 x 100 mg daily.

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) was effective at 400 mg daily in another study.

The thing to remember in all of this is - do your research. University medical centers are most reputable and have good doctors, even if they may charge high amounts. Check any “specialists” credentials. See if he/she has done any research that you can read. Find out on this board which doctors people have seen and their experiences. Get referrals through your health provider.

UPMC is where the “specialist” is. I beg to differ that university medical centers are “most reputable.”
Some of the most incompetent doctors I have ever met are at university medical centers.
I have never found any that equal the quality of my Doctors at Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale. No one has even come close.

I wish I was back in Scottsdale, that’s for sure.

Heather, I am very shocked at this. UPMC as a great reputation and my point about university medical centers is that I would take them over say a doctor who is unaffiliated. Granted, any doctor can be incompetent, but if someone in UPMC was doing this, I would think that if someone was told (and maybe that is it - no one has squealed), it would be addressed. However, UPMC includes doctors as part of their organization who are really add ons - meaning, I would go into Pittsburgh and to one of their clinics before selecting a “specialist” for migraines out where I live. Not sure where you went or who you saw, but this is VERY strange and upsetting. Did you go to the Headache Center instead? My doctor is a top neurologist who runs the balance disorders area and is knowledgable about MAV, having seen cases and written a few related articles with Hain. Again, I always say do as much research about a doctor before you invest anything into it.

Shocked? I can’t tell you how many people who live in this city blast UPMC. Many have gone over to AGH.
I was at the headache center. Saw the top dog. And if that’s their top dog, good grief what a pity.

As a matter of fact, before I left the house, I said to my Dad, “watch, the idiot will DX me with NPDH”
That’s exactly what happened. NPDH is nothing but a BS DX when someone doesn’t know what is wrong with you.
Frankly, I’ve said for decades that if you are suicidal, just come to PGH. The doctors will kill you and you won’t have to do the deed yourself.
When my Mom was dying of Cancer, I almost punched her UPMC Oncologist. Biggest piece of garbage you would want to meet, that guy.
What a joy to meet the top brain surgeon at Northwestern in Chicago who upon hearing how horribly my Mom was treated at UPMC, took it upon himself to
take my mother by the hands and say “No one is going to hurt you here. I won’t let them.” Now THAT was a decent doctor and human being. I have met several UPMC Docs
and have been disgusted with their stupidity. And I do mean stupidity. I don’t know how some got through med school.

I would never say anything negative about any of my Docs at Mayo. Smart as whips and they loved an educated patient.
Seems any Doc I have met outside of Mayo is actually threatened by an educated patient. Sad, but true.
I told “top dog” at the headache center you spoke of, that he was wrong when he claimed occipital neuralgia can only be one-sided.
He was indeed wrong. It can present bilaterally. So who wants a doc who doesn’t even know his *hit?
Not I.

Am I tough on Docs? You better believe it. I’ve studied medicine for 12 years. I started studying medicine as self-defense when I saw
how incompetent the medical community was as a whole. (Nothing like realizing this when you have 2 acute infections and an autoimmune disease, but they tell
you that you are “fine.”) Third leading cause of death in the USA, is doctor error.

Sorry to hear that you had so many bad experiences. No one should have to go through all that crap. Mine thankfully, have been good ones. Funny you mention the AGH. A fellow MAV’er started there first and was unhappy with the results so went to UPMC and had a good experience. Guess it depends on what doctor you get. Let me clarify, however, that the TOP DOG that I refer to has nothing to do with the Headache center and as this is where you had your problem, we are likely talking about a different guy. The neurologist I see has a good reputation and never said anything really off mark so far and believe me, I have done my research and shared with some folk here who see with Dr. Hain for comparison sake. You make a good point about patient education. My doc was impressed that I had educated myself and was receptive to it . That to me is a good sign. I am glad you mention the Headache Ccenter however, as that place too was recently suggested to me. Now I know there are big problems there. I wish you luck in your future doc experiences.

You must be referring to Joe Furman. He calls MAV, MARD.
