Hamalygi Appt. and also Lyrica (Pregablin)

Hi

I have my appt. with Dr Hamalgyi at RPA on 9th of Feb. to help detemine if MAV is my problem. I was disappointed to hear that another person went recently (forgot the name) and wasn’t happy with the visit. I have to travel interstate so I hope it’s worth the trouble?

I recently read on another site that someone who had migraine with lots of anxiety convinced her doc. to let her try Lyrica (not sure of the spelling). It’s an anit- epileptic drug and she says it was great. Stopped the migraines and the anxiety. Interested to know if anyone else has tried this med and if it worked for them? Also is it available in Australia?

Cheers

Hi dizzyloopy

That would have been Scott - his experience was a bit of a pity. Halmagyi is definitely a brilliant researcher but can have an interesting bedside manner like most doctors. In the end he admitted he didn’t know what was going on, but the only way to figure these things out is to try a few things. He prescribed Scott amitryptiline. I think Scott is going to start trialling these things shortly so we should know whether he has MAV or not.

I have taken Lyrica myself - it is a newer variant of neurontin (gabapentin). I didn’t find it much different to neurontin. I still take neurontin now and have had some excellent results with it but they have tended to wear off. I must agree that it is brilliant for migraine and any associated anxiety - I noticed a calmness and a reduction of my usual level of racing thoughts - it’s good not to be thinking ALL the time. It also improved my mood (and of course the dizzies).

Thanks Adam

I do know what you mean by specialists being, shall we say, eccentric?

I am eager to try some medication and hope that I don’t suffer to many side effects. Sometimes I wonder if my symptoms aren’t all anxiety produced. The fatigue and anxiety are big ones for me. But then I do have typical migraine (with aura) in the past and now just seem so have lingering headaches. Also my inability to focus on objects that are moving up and down and my hatred of fluro. lighting seem to point to migraine?

I’ll post after I see the doc. in Feb.
