How many MAV'ers Have GI probs or IBS constipation etc:

Sorry Jess, then yes that’s definitely worthy of investigation!

It does concern me how AD’s can upset the function of the gut though and that might lead to complications.

How did you get on?

No specific cure on my end. Seems to be sporadic flare-ups. Doesn’t seem to matter if I eat healthy or unhealthy. When I’m in stressful/anxious situations, I get stomach spasms and intense gas in upper tract. I’ve concluded its a by-product of MAV.

Thanks. Glad to hear you’ve had some relief and it’s not constant! Yeah it’s super weird.

I had esophageal spasms most days for about 1 year during MAV. An ENT looked down my throat and said it looked like silent reflux. I never embraced that diagnosis however as my diet couldn’t be any better - it didin’t make any sense, I wasn’t eating any of the problematic foods for reflux. Anyways, my theory was that the vagus nerve was getting activated from all the migraine stuff - could also be a connection with digestion in general. As soon as my MAV symptoms came down the “silent reflux” went away. I hated those spasms, and on top of MAV it just made life miserable. Felt like someone was always choking me and I was constantly swallowing.

For the past month i’ve had mild constipation. My BMs are just as frequent as usual and i’m not struggling to pass and don’t have pain, but (sorry TMI) it’s 2 or 3 small hard lumps instead of a proper movement. Never had gastro symptoms with VM before except a mildly gassy stomach. Not sure if the new constipation is because of VM or if it’s just a result of my diet being so rubbish because of nausea and dizziness, and being in bed most of the time. Lack of fiber and lack of exercise can cause constipation.

Is there a reason why you eat a “rubbish” diet? It is not good for constipation and it is not good for your VM either. A good diet and movement (e.g. walking) are essential for getting better.

Because of nausea. I only eat small meals and the same bland, basic foods. The whole “movement” is essential thing never worked for me, all it ever did was make me worse. I wouldn’t exercise until i found relief from medication. Although many people recommend certain lifestyle treatments not everyone with vm is the same and not everyone gets better with the same treatment.

I have Fibro and now underactive thyroid so IBS goes with both of those. Was diagnosed with IBS years ago. I found going low carb and cutting out bread, pasta helped quite a bit. Dried fruit like apricots is horrendous for me. So now avoided. My husband gets classic migraines and also has chronic IBS and GERD so I think its very common.

When I feel nauseous, I often make chicken soup/stew. It consists of chicken thighs, lots of vegetables and fresh ginger. It is one of the few things that I feel like eating and it is nutritious.

I know I’ve been in this thread before discussing mild constipation (which was several years ago and looking back was most likely down to me being in bed all day and not eating much due to nausea. I haven’t been constipated since except when on Atogepant).

Now I’m having random flare ups of loose stool. Not diarrhea, as I only go once a day which is normal frequency for me. But once a day i’ve been having a loose bowel movement. No pain, no cramps. It’s been happening on and off for about 5 months now. It lasts several days, to a week, then I go back to normal for a month or more then the loose stools return. I can’t link it to anything I eat, there’s been no changes in my diet, and since it’s not actual diarrhea and there’s no pain it medically seems insignificant but I’m wondering if it may be the VM. I’ve been having a daily headache these past few days. Only mild, and it only lasts a short while before fading back to normal. But I wonder if this loose stool is somehow coming from the VM.
