I'm having my dr. prescribe me Periactin, What do you think?

Mupp,

I know we can do this. I have a good feeling that this med is gonna do it for us. There’s a posting somewhere on the forum here that I can’t find right now from the very similar med pizotifen trials. I have to say I’m rather impressed with the people’s response from this med. Most of the conclusions were that the people with dizzy, balance, motion etc. had complete resolution in symptoms with Pizotifen. Now as we know, pizotifen is like periactin’s brother or sister,so on that note, we are gonna be just fine. I really think so. So get ready to be dizzy free my friend…

Hi Greg,

I’m attaching the full MIMS PI sheet here for you to read up on this med. Again, I don’t feel comfortable telling you when and how you should take Periactin as I would always suggest you work with your own GP for this sort of information. I can say that Granot told me to take it at 7 PM but on reflection I don’t know if that would apply to 16 mg all at once. I would have gone back to him to clarify that. If it were me I’d probably try to do it in two rounds as you wrote in the last example – morning and night.

Note that you may not need 16 mg to sort this out. I was on the phone with Jen today who will no doubt add to this thread very soon. She thinks Periactin is the best med she’s come across for migraine ever. She’s on 12 mg (two morning and one night) only. Side effects include an insatiable appetite which you’ll have to keep under control and the odd tiredness kicking in for no particular reason but nothing else. I know she had start up side effects such as headache and feeling jacked up (like I did).

I would personally stay on a gradual titration and let the migraine brain adapt and not suddenly pound 16 mg. Don’t push it too fast. Increase by 2 mg/week is what Granot told me. This was the titration schedule for Piz. You could sub in Peri here by bumping it up 1 mg per week – or speed things up to 2 mg/weekly until you hit 16 mg. If good at this dose I’d probably wind it back to see what the minimum dose was that I could get away with.

Titration schedule Pizotifen
week 1: 0.25 mg
week 2: 0.5 mg (1 pill)
week 3: 0.75 mg
week 4: 1 mg (2 pills)
week 5: 1.25 mg
week 6: 1.5 mg (3 pills)

Hi Guy’s ,
I’m so glad you’re giving this med a go, I have found it a life saver.
I don’t rock anymore, and my migraines are hardly noticeable.
I have had some issues with eating! yep .. I want to eat everything I set my eyes on, I’ve gained weight, but hopefully that will settle down with time.
I don’t really have any side effects apart from dry mouth in the morning, so drinking more water during the day helps.
It hasn’t helped my IBS, but that’s just .. another challenge to conquer.
Seems to me the longer I’m on the med the better things become, it gives me peace of mind( a quietness inside the brain) I don’t worry about anything , in turn it relieves symptoms of mav.
Awesome med!!!
Greg and Muppo, I take two tabs straight up as soon as I wake…
then one at night.

Thinking of you all.

Scott,

thanks a lot for the info. I’m just getting anxious to see the benefits with this med. I have already worked myself up to 4 mg. at night with no bad side effects. The only thing I notice is dry mouth, a little extra tiredness and the sense of false motion has picked up some, but on the good side, I’ve noticed that I sleep very well, and during the morning hours, the off balance and false motion is nearly gone. After about 11 in the morning, my symptoms are back for the remainder of the day. I also notice that, after I take it at 7 at night, I get the feeling of being in a very calm state. Almost like taking valium. I’ve only been on valium for 3 days when I was at U of M hospital back in october, but when I take peri, about a half hour after I take it, it reminds me very much of a small dose of valium from what I can remember. I’m really starting to like Peri. The calming effects I have been getting from it are wonderfull.

So what I’m going to do is take 2 mg. in the morning and 2 mg. at 7 P.M. and see how it goes. I will bump it up 2mg. per week so I don’t rock the boat as much.
I’ll be honest though, I’m finding this med to be extremely easy so far. I’ve so far had no issues with appetite.

Jen,

thanks for your input, you have been the main inspiration for me to even try this med. If it works for me I’ll be sooooooooooooo happy. Thanks.

Greg

Hi Greg,
at first I was thinking it was going to be yet another fail, Until I hit the prescribed dose per day, that’s when I hit my sweet spot.
so give it time, if your like me, you’ll be there in no time.

best Jen

Jen,

Thanks a lot for your last post, because yesterday my balance hass really gone banana’s. I’m all over the place right now. I’m just gonna have to wait it out I guess. I figured that since this med is initially screwing up my balance even more right now, it may as well fix it when I get up to 16mg. And like Scott said, after I wait it out at 16 mg., if my balance is back to normal, then I can cut back on some of the dosage to see if I can get away with a lower dose.

My balance seemed to be getting better for a day or two, but I was only on 1-2 mg. a day. Now that I’m on 4mg., I seem to be quite off balance most of the time. Really hard to walk in the dark. Well, here I go to waiting it out.

I’m not considered the extra off balance as a side effect though. Should I? Maybe. I don’t know.

Greg

Mupp,

Here is the link I was talking about a few posts ago, that had the impressive results with people on Pizotifen.

Greg

hi guys, greg and muppo can you keep me posted how its going i put myself on 2 mg p/day and bumping up to 4 tonight. its only been a week so ill keep trying, i think i have to get to 16 from what ive read, so far only tired side effects im hoping this works or ill have to more powerfull meds via the dr, but i figure they are experiementing with me so i might have a go too after 2 years i figure what the hell? anyway i dont need a script its over the counter here..ive a least got a med plan now thanks to all the info here

good luck bec - I’ll have my fingers crossed for you!

Becd,

It’s been 1 1/2 weeks since I’ve been on Peri. I’m at 8mg. at the moment. So far, no changes with my balance. Although I’d have to say it’s pretty early into my trial. So I’m just waiting it out.

Greg

My balance dizziness isnt better as yet either but im giving it 6/7 weeks before i give up. Im still getting headaches and a couple of migranes(i forgot to take it a had a huge headache)so fingers all crossed.

Becd,

Remember to give it 6-7 weeks AFTER you’ve titrated up to the full dosage required for migraine. Check with your doctor if you don’t know what is the full dosage for migraine. I’m going to start counting the weeks after I’ve climbed to 16mg.

Greg

OH thanks i forgot about that. Migrane dose is 16?? im doing this w/out dr then if it doesnt work i try again on their pills. The stuff they gave me made me dizzer but they said oh its the condition not pills but after i stopped i went back to where i was(still not good) also they rx stuff more toxic than this, so after years im giving a tests a go .. I dont need a script here in oz anyway. :?

Becd,

Yes, the highest dose for migraine, Periactin is 16mg. just to clarify. I just want to make sure we’re talking about the same med right now.

Hi greg, yes im trialling periactin its just a anti histimane thats available otc here in oz. Im getting some imertex?? via dr today just for when i have a bad headache but i dont thinks its a preventor though
