I just wanted to add that I have mentioned before a doctor in the US called Harold Levinson who treats anxiety disorders with what he claims are vestibular stabilising medications and a number of these are antihistamines! So I thought that there might be some connection here? He claims to have a very good response in treating anxiety problems as he thinks anxious people are, by and large, anxious, due to a malfunctioning vestibular system. This causes them to see the world as unstable and as a results makes them more prone to panic.

Is this the dr. Levi son who specializes in dyslexia out of new York?
Interested to learn more about him!
Kelley
Yes Kelley it is the same doctor. He has a book called “Phobia Free” which explains his theories. He also has a web site. I did contact him once and he does do phone consults with your own doctor. I live in Australia so it’s not possible to see him in person but I was interested in anyone who had success with his medications.
Jen just saw your news - great stuff - I hope it continues to work wonders for you and that it does the same for Scott too - hang in there guys!
Hi All,
Yes Scottie , in fact that first week , I had a pannic attack, I havent had one of those in 5 years, it was definately the new med.
I had many side effects the first week, palpations , feeling nausiated (so I drank Milk before the pill which worked) cognetive memory issues (word finding )
all these side effects have gone and after the **first week ** I was then able to hit a full dose 4mg and then continue going higher every other day , with no extra side effects.
Then all I feel now is realy relaxed and no symptoms and free form migraine.
As you know , I have been a stubborn case with continuous Migraine for many years now, Not even effexor could give me any reliefe and we know how heavy duty that med can be.
This stuff is a breeze in comparison to many meds I’ve tried.
DizzyloopI have no knowledge about studies being done about this med, sorry.
Bec, it is over the counter med, yes
I dont know how long I’m alowed on it, but will be having another appointment with my Dr this week , to tell him my good news and to see what he thinks about all this.
Thanks Greg will do
Cecilia good to hear some one else who was helped by this med.
Vic… Thanks xxxx
Jen, fantastic news! So glad you have finally some medication that works for you
Hi Jen,
just wanted to say how pleased I am for you. That is absolutely fantastic news; I am so happy for you, because I’ve read so many of your posts and know how you’ve struggled with this thing.
I’m also really interested to hear that this is working for you, because I made a note some time ago, when Scott mentioned that this was similar to Pizotifen (which I had some success with in the past) in this thread:

Long may it continue working its magic for you, Jen!
Tony.
Great news, congrats. I have actually noticed that my allergy medicine Clartin D has made me feel better as well. I know that psuedophderine is known to calm the nervous system and make you feel very focused. The combo of this and the antihistimine seem to slow things down for me. I might do trial where I take it everyday to see how it feels. But great news on your recovery.
Great , Great, Great News!!!
This might have already been posted…but…what is the U.S. equivalent of the medication in the States?
And…is it over the counter or is it a prescription?
The reason it intrigues me is the histamine portion of it. One of the last remaining (and it is a doozy) ailments is my full head, stuffy head feeling.
I am wondering if this would act as an allergy type medicine and clear my noggin some???
Thanks!
tcs
Todd,
I’m not sure about the Periactin here in the US, but I take promethazine and it is also an antihistamine. You should give it a try if you can’t find periactin. You need a script. IT works very good for me.
Maybe Gail knows?

Hi Deekon
Interested in hear that psuedophderine makes you feel better. It also helps clear up my anxiety and dizziness. I wonder why? Does it work on the vestibular system in some way? I know that many people actually get the opposite effect and feel anxious on it! We can’t get it OTC in Aust. anymore. Let me know if you do start taking it on a daily basis and if it works for you. I imagine you will have a difficult time convincing a doc. to treat you with this med.? Good luck.

Hi Dizzy,
It definitely relaxes your vestibular system. I have been taking it for years well before my dizziness and I always noticed that it made me feel very calm and relaxed. Everything just slowed down for me and I really felt like i was living in the moment. I am a bit of an anxious/add person to being with and this was just a side effect for my allergies. I love the way it made me feel though. You have to watch the dose, if i take too much I get very jittery and can’t sleep. Anxiety is one of the side effects, but it doesn’t make me more anxious. I don’t think I can get a doc to agree with me, but I can get it over the counter and I asked my allergist if I can take it everyday and she said it would be alright. I decided this week that I will take one a pill a day, just to see how it feels. I will keep you posted. I do want to say I am at about 95% right now without it, but I wonder if this can put me back at “normal”. I know I shouldn’t push my luck, but what the heck.
Thanks for the reply. Where did you find the info. on how it works on the vestibular system? I’d be interested in showing my doc.
I’m really pleased for you after such a long hard climb.
Jen - firstly, I’m doing cartwheels of excitment for you. Long may it continue girl - bless you!!
Kelley - you know I’m still holidng onto the Promethizane and only ever took the one pill as I was worried about the interaction with the Nortriptyline. But this past week since coming back from Ab Dab, I’m not doing so good so I’m thinking of adding it nightly to see what happens…
I want to check also if Periacitn has any known interactions with Nort as I might try and get hold of that too…
Not sure about the US Lisa say’s it fell out of favor for some reason with the FDA , but that might not mean it’s not available, someone said it is by prescription over there.

HI all,
I spoke with a pharmacist and got the info on Periactin over here in the states. It is only available as generic (at least at the pharm I was at) and dosing starts at a 4mg tablet. It is indicated for allergies/hives etc, and doesn’t mention migraine on the med sheet…I am going t ask my doctor about trying it next time I go…
It does say it can lessen the effects of an antidepressant as it is a serotonin antagonist. From what I can tell, I only see where it antagonizes the receptor 5ht2, which is an excitatory receptor, and that might mean it will be good for anxiety etc…
Kelley
Ive been reading up on the Periactin and that it is prescribed for child/adolescent migraine etc… I’m thinking this could be good. My mum is going to be asking our pharmacist to get me some.
Sounds yummy…

on my box of periactin it actually has dosage levels for migraine, so is certainly used for that in Oz
