Just started Effexor (and stopped Tramadol) - symptoms worse?

Prince Charming might be a Covid carrier so I best settle for the alarm

Hiya Clare
Good on you for deciding to stick with it - it can be very stressful starting on meds but bear in mind I am on 150mg so 12.5mg is a very small dose - that’s not to say it won’t have any effect it’s just more of a reassurance to you from an anxiety perspective. In relation to low blood pressure I have that too and I had an awful experience on Propanolol immediate release tablets - however I am now on Prop sustained release and it did not drop my blood pressure at all - i was seriously anxious when I started taking them that I would be lightheaded but I wasn’t so don’t be put off. Note Prop is no longer used to treat high blood pressure cos it doesn’t lower it enough - so that’s a reassurance also.
Hope u feel better soon

How is your tinnitus going after reducing down to 12.5?

FYI, I started Emgality 4 days ago. No impact to my tinnitus which is great, but no real change to my dizziness either. The only side effect I’ve had so far is a bit of joint pain, which hasn’t been a problem.

Scratch that, tinnitus spiked today, along with really bad joint pain in my knees, ankles, wrists and fingers. I just can’t win. And worryingly, it’s a long, long half life (28 days) so I might be in this for the long haul. Ughh…

Darn that’s a bummer, I hope its just a fluke and it calms down soon for ya. Let us know how you feel in a week.

I was taking valium then my doctor advised me to try effexor. What i did is i stoped the valuim and started the effexor (which was the wrong decision) i had experienced increase n my symptoms, bad vertigo attacks, shaking in my body, weird feelings.

So the doctor advised me to go back to valuim and try to decrease it gradually.

Btw, currently i am not using both medicines because they did not cure me. Currently on Nortriptyline and hope it will work.

So I did go back down to 12.5 of Venex/Effexor. Tinnitus gradually reduced. Last night I took 25mg and tinnitus this morning is OK, but not great. I’m going to keep going with this med, but titrate upwards very very slowly.

@cjmca I’m glad you got some relief, and I’m wishing you good luck on the 25mg. Can you let us know how you get on? I’m likely going to have to follow the same path and try and push through on Effexor.

I took my Emgality injection two weeks ago, and got a tinnitus spike similar to the rest of the meds I’ve tried. It did get slightly better, but I think it’s due to habituation.

The first week on Emgality, I was more dizzy than usual. This week, I’ve had more 1/10 dizzy days than the past 5 months, so it feels like it’s doing something positive. I haven’t had any “crystal clear” days though.

i’m far from an expert, but it could be associated with what you eat too, certain foods are better while others are worse. for example, i know that grapefruit juice can affect certain medications… just saying.
anyway, i really hope you would do better as soon as possible.

@cjmca how did you get on with Effexor? Did the tinnitus settle down?

Hiya,

Am I the only one now having trouble getting hold of Venex? Seems out of stock everywhere :frowning:

Clare

I’m at 37.5mg, yes the tinnitus went back to baseline. But, I just had 3 days of heavy computer use and all my symptoms have hugely ramped up. Tinnitus, visual snow, afterimages, photophobia… all worse.

I’m moving house the end of this week - there’s a lot of stress on at the moment.

Once I’ve moved house I’m going to titrate up another 12.5, see how I do. But I am certainly used to 37.5 mg now, and I think if I hadn’t been finishing my college course (eff you chronic migraine, I’m still graduating!), my symptoms wouldn’t be ramped up right now. Hoping for improvement

Hiya, was OK last month but will know in a couple of weeks when I renew script. there was one month where I had to get the teva brand instead of my usual one. What’s your pharmacist saying?

That it’s out of stock everywhere. Did you have any issues switching to a different brand?

Really happy to hear that.

I tried Verapamil again (120mg 2 weeks, then 180mg 4 weeks), tinnitus spiked badly, but I pushed through and it settled after 4 weeks or so – not quite back to normal, but close enough. Feeling much better, but the doc is suggesting trying Effexor again and pairing them up. Considering it, given I have more confidence in the tinnitus settling.

Keep us posted on how it goes after your 12.5 mg climb.

No issues at all thankfully. Will get in touch with my pharmacist so.

Not sure where you live but there are shortages of many commonly used drugs including Effexor here in UK and according to the national press in many other countries too and this all predates Covid-19 crisis. I ran a thread on shortage of Propranolol starting 18 months back. Some people, @Jojo65 for one, have had trouble and do experience difficulties changing brands unfortunately you certainly wouldn’t want to stop taking Effexor abruptly so no choice but to try whatever is offered and hope for the best. It will most probably be fine.

Really glad to hear this! Good for you pushing thru. I’m waiting before titrating up again - I just finished my college course. Moving house next week. When settled, I’ll be focussing on nothing but trying to break this migraine. Will definitely keep trying medications and won’t give up on them too early on…
