The light at dusk has been giving me problems for quite some time now, especially when driving. It’s the weirdest feeling and hard to explain. It’s when people are starting to put their headlights on, etc. I would rather have it all dark or all light. Even with sunglasses on it just makes me feel panicky. (I have problems with inside lights too)
Does anyone else experience this???
I experience this - absolutely. Often I ask my wife to drive to dinner (if we’d be driving around dusk) because I simply can’t do so without tremendous anxiety, but I have much less of a problem driving home later in the evening. It’s horrible and very hard to explain to people who do not experience it.
On a related note, sometimes when I come to a stoplight I have to continuously let my foot off the brake just long enough to feel the car moving again, as I need that feeling of movement. Do you experience this at all?

I do feel that, but part of me thinks it is anxiety related that I just want to get on down the road and get to where I am going. I don’t pull right up on somebody for this exact reason…it allows me to inch my way. Weird isn’t it???
Very weird. Yes, I am constantly inching. Passangers hate me for it, so that’s why I recommend they drive
I also can only really drive without anxiety in areas which I’m very comfortable. For example, I can drive to and from work and the supermarket without any issue, but if you give me an address a couple of towns over I’ll most likely (certainly if it’s dusk or dark outside) panic as I’m driving there. Feeling “comfortable” with my surroundings is HUGE for me.
Wow Hektisk, you and I sound so familiar with driving issues. I know EXACTLY what you mean about inching forward at a stoplight or stop sign, particularly if I have just gotten off a highway or have been driving for a long period of time. I don’t know why it helps but it does help. If I don’t do it I get the sways and rocking so badly it almost feels like a panic attack. Funny I thought I was alone in doing that.
Hektisk-
I don’t drive on the highway as it makes me quite panicky. Previously i had driven thousands of miles in a trip by myself without issue. This condition sucks
Wow, I am also an “incher.”. I am not sure why it helps me, but I think it has something to do with motion. When I am driving, I usually feel fine, but stopping isn’t so great. If I have a little movement by moving my truck forward while at a light or stop sign, it seems to help. I am sure people think I am extra anxious for the light to change the way I constantly inch forward, but if it keeps me driving, I don’t mind the strange looks I get!
Peace
I’m very sorry to hear that other people have the same issues, though I am a little relieved that it’s not only me.
I have other crazy anxiety too now - like when I start thinking about driving long distances I think about the shape of the earth and how driving “north” should mean I’m going “up” and I start to having feelings of panic. (The logic should be the same for short distance drives but for whatever reason I’m able to keep my mind better occupied when I’m not traveling too far or within a comfort zone.) Shapes, sizes - I just have really odd and strong reactions towards things now.
