The forum is very helpful, lots of good info I didn’t find elsewhere. My question is the walking. A few months before I was diagnosed with PPPD in Dec ‘23, I was stumbling a bit on my daily walks. At first I attributed it to a detached retina from a cycling accident in ‘14, but my staggered gait got progressively worse. Caused a fall in June ‘24 that put me in the hospital for tests. Fast forwarding, walking now is still very staggering, necessitating a cane. Do all sorts of leg strengthening exercises, but no improvement. Still dealing with PPPD and dizziness, so that doesn’t help. Any thoughts?

I struggle with balance – I used a walking stick all the time for several years. Now that I’m more stable I only use it at night or when I’m walking on uneven ground. Preventative meds and vestibular therapy helped quite a bit. But one of the first signs that a VM episode is about to hit is when I begin to stumble, tip over or have trouble walking in a straight line. Even on good days my balance isn’t great but I keep walking no matter what. If you haven’t tried vestibular therapy, I recommend you give it a shot.

Had several sessions back in early ‘24. Going in for more next month. I do the ones I got from YouTube but balance actually got worse. Have also been doing leg strengthening exercises. Thanks so much for your response. It comes at a good time. Things to discuss with my Neurologist!

….re-reading your comment. I have to take my hat off to you. You’ve been dealing with this for years. I’m going whacky after just a couple. Not how I thought I’d spend my Golden Years! But folks like you give me hope. Thanks again!

When I started having vestibular migraine issues, my balance was greatly affected. I couldn’t sit, stand or walk and used a wheelchair for 12 years. But it was never a leg strength issue. Eventually surgery, meds, balance and vestibular physical therapy helped. I advanced to a walker and, in late 2023, a cane. I have improved immensely in the past few years and my migraines (although not gone) are under much better control. I hope you also improve.

You have had quite a journey. Glad you’re finally on an upward path. It’s amazing how much migraines can affect all aspects of your being. I’ve been doing vestibular drills, but probably not to the level I need. Am scheduled to work with a vestibular trainer in early July. Hoping for the best.

Have not posted in a while. Have been doing g all the daily exercises and walking short distance using trekking poles. I pretty much lost the sight in my left eye when I had a bike accident and a detached retina which couldn’t be repaired. Vision in right eye is perfect except when I walk outside. Then my vision gets blurry and very light sensitive. I’ve been told this is due to my brain being overloaded trying to adapt to the balance issues and only having one good eye. Anyone one ever had a similar reaction walking outside? If I’m in a car, no vision problems at all. Thanks!

I had similar, if in a car or (believe it or not), running or on roller skates or ice skates - no balance issues, but if walking again, all the imbalance came back.

My vision issues (nystagmus) were controlled by Amitriptyline that I took for 1.5 years.

Take care of yourself and keep persevering … you will improve and symptoms will settle down I’m sure!

How interesting! Have you consulted with a neuro-optometrist or neuro-opthalmologist? Maybe there’s a solution for you with special glasses? Or something else? Worth checking out.

I’m going to get an appointment with a neurologist-otolaryngologist. Hope he can sort it out. He’s rated a top doc here in Atlanta.

Thanks for the tip.
