Scintillating Scotoma. Lovely new addition!

Yeah this is a visual migraine aura, called scintillating scotoma. Itā€™s one of the more common migraine aura types. I used to get them ALL the time. Morning, noon, and night they pop in like they own the place.

A depiction of a scintillating scotoma that was almost spiral-shaped, with distortion of shapes but otherwise melting into the background similarly to the physiological blind spot. This depiction shows the type of patterning that some have described as similar to WidmanstƤtten patterns.

My vision didnā€™t look anything like those gifs though. Just a small, vague, flashy zigzaggy line that got worse until the headache started. I dunno why you ranomly get new symptoms with VM as time goes on. Had it 13 years and never ever had an aura before. I had vague buzzing/scratchy feelings in my face/head/beck last few weeks too.

Thatā€™s exactly how Iā€™d describe it.

I always got weird patterning, zig zag lines and vision loss not disimilar to the gifs before a migraine. Sometimes I would just get that and no pain or headache but it wasnā€™t common. Classic migraineurs also get auras as well. I just assumed my migraines were the regular, boring, run of the mill ones.

I have never experienced diziness or vertigo before, during or after a migraine until the one I had in April 2022. Which led to almost constant 24/7 imbalance symptoms.

Mine looked like zig zag lines, too and also shattered glass. No migraine history and after a migraine with aura last year, it seems to have triggered all of this for me with the 24/7 dizziness and visual issues.

Thatā€™s interesting and unfortunate. Weird how a migraine can be the catalyst for so much suffering. I veer between thinking mine is more PPPD like, then other days it seems more like MAV.

Iā€™ve been getting a lot of ear popping and clicking recently, especially on waking. It seems thatā€™s a migraine symptom. I dont know why I have such a problem accepting the diagnosis, but Iā€™m still questioning it, over a year later. I just dont get how you can be fine one day, have a migraine and from then onwards feel unbalanced and off all the time. I worry the migraine I had caused brain damage or something.

Iā€™m not convinced itā€™s all migraine but this symptom is clearly.

Theres a chicken and egg thing going on and who knows what kicked off what? (hence the ā€˜associatedā€™ in MAV)

I completely relate, DizzyandConfused. Not sure how a migraine started the hardest year of relentless symptoms. You may have PPPD and VM, I was diagnosed with both but frankly, I am still unclear on the differentiation. I also struggle to accept the diagnosis but have done extensive diagnostic testing to weed so much outā€¦alas, I find myself here.

mine isnt exactly like this either but I think these things are difficult to depict. Mine is more like a visual vibration that happens in my peripheral vision

I have the vibrating in peripheral, as wellā€¦along with a kind of strobing in my peripheral, as if the lights are flickering on and off. I never thought of this as an aura, but now wonder if it is. There is no clear start and stop to any of this for me, but this tends to happen on and off a few times a day.
