Hi everyone…so I am about to ditch the piz and try topa. I have been holding onto hope as some of my positional vertigo seemed a bit better on the piz but I still have headache (dull) on and off and daily imbalance and dizziness (that feels like it’s in my eyes with that heavy head feeling.) I put the dose up to 2mg a week ago but overall have been on it for about 6 or 7 weeks. I am assuming if it was going to be my magic pill. it would be by now.
Has anyone failed on piz but found help on something else? What was it that helped?
Also, does anyone have any tips re how to come offthe piz? Can I stop cold turkey and take topa the next day? It’s hard as the prescribing specialist is in another state.
I actually feel like my daily dizziness is worse because being on a med trial I am foccusing on it all the time - trying to work out if it’s better or worse etc. I wish I could stop ‘googling’ and looking for answers and quick fixes (as I know there isn’t any) but I just want my life to be normal! It’s starting to take its’ toll I guess.
Pizotifen was my first trialled migraine med, it was working but I developed a horrid headache that was constant and painful, worried that pizotifen was the cause, I stopped piz and started on ami, got up to 20 mg on the ami but side effects weren’t agreeing with me, so I’m going off the ami. As I had been off the piz for over a month, the headache still there and dizziness creeping back, I decided to go back on the piz. L’ll be up to 1.5 mg tomorrow.
With your question about coming off the piz. No you can’t just go cold turkey. If you didn’t experience any side effects going up, you can go relatively quickly coming off. Perhaps doing it over a fortnight. Every 4 or so days decrease your dose. If you get some side effects, so it down more.
Every med has the possibility of working for you. Have you had a look at the thread ‘papers you should read’, there you’ll find info about meds that are used to treat MAV. Consider choosing ones that you’ll gain more from I.e if you’re experiencing anxiety, perhaps trying, ami, nori, Dothep etc.
It’s a testing time, going through this, you’ll find your magic med, just make sure with each trial you give each med a fair go, give it the opportunity to kick some MAV butt. Good luck.

Hi Aussie, unfortunately 7 weeks isn’t anywhere near long enough to see a difference. You need to take it for 3 months at a thereapeutic dose before you give up, otherwise it’s not a fair trial. I know it’s hard and i’m in the same position with ami, but i’ve got to stick with it to give it a chance.Goodluck x
Pizotifen has helped my daily headache I must say. Used to get one every day and especially if I put my contact lenses in. Just a bit of daylight used to set the headache off with the dull heaviness over my eyes but Pizotifen I believe stopped that almost immediately. It hasn’t helped the dizziness or inbalance though thats still as bad as ever.
