When it comes down to it as long as you are under his care your own GP can overrule all others. Can overrule any medication suggested by your specialist. He/she is ultimately responsible for your health. Has he/she made the necessary referrals for you to access ā€˜a psychiatrist who understands the conditionā€™. If not he/she needs a reminder to do so. Suggest you have another word.

Thanks Helen
No they have no idea where to start re psychiatrist that knows of the condition. Iā€™ve just heard back from Dr Surenthiran re any possible recommendation and sadly he canā€™t recommend anyone either. Im feeling totally lost!

And concerned about getting any sleep tonight!

Well arenā€™t people real helpful. Try this one tomorrow.

Indeed! Thanks so much Helen, Iā€™ll look at properly tomorrow but at first glance these look like physiologist rather than psychiatrist which is what they are specifically requesting advice from. Iā€™ve already tried the former and no luck!

They do offer psychologists - clinical psychologists. I figured one of those might know where you could look.

Otherwise trawl the U.K. Migraine charities - thereā€™s several. Ring in and plea assistance in locating one. Cross their palm with silver, a donation. It canā€™t possibly be a new request not to them.

Thinking about the exact spec further over my evening meal I wondered why it had to be a migraine specialist one. Surely they arenā€™t that specific. Whatā€™s wrong with one who works with all/any chronic conditions. Canā€™t be much different and besides with your recent IVF failure whose to know whatā€™s the cause of your current problems? Got me wondering if your Doctor just playing silly devils. Going out his way to be awkward.

Consider switching from Nort to Amitriptyline which may make you more drowsy at night and improve your tolerance of screens?

At the moment Dr S wants me to increase my Nort dosage, Iā€™m currently taking 65mg but working my way up to 80mg.

Strangely I was on 50mg Nort for a period of time and had a fairly good patch but not working for me now. Dr S thinks itā€™s down to a combination of IVF, peri menopause and too many cā€™s in the diet!

I tried Ami some years back and recall it didnt help, however I donā€™t think I trialled for that long (itā€™s before I met dr s and discovered the wonderful mvertigo and learnt you need to trial meds for a reasonable amount of time).

Youā€™d know inside 2 months I reckon.

Just a case of that dose not being robust enough with all those traumatic additional stressors. One has to doubt whether any drug combination would be. If the tendency to hypersensitivity stays with us as neurologists tell us it does, surely itā€™s bound to break down occasionally under such circumstances despite all the packets of pills. Youā€™ve been through enough recently to knock anybody over.

Psychologists canā€™t prescribe drugs, only psychiatrists can as they are medical doctors. A lesser known fact.

Good to know. From my notes I can see I was on it for around 4 months but I think no more than 20mg, is that a reasonable dosage level?

Youā€™re absolutely right Helen and good to be reminded, thank you. Itā€™s so easy to fall down ā€˜the meds have stopped workingā€¦ then Iā€™m back to square oneā€¦back to the med lotteryā€¦panicā€¦panicā€¦my lifeā€™s overā€™ malarky. Not today I refuse to go there.

As it is possible to just switch between the two, Ami and Nort, several on here have done so and recorded it, one must assume 20mg Ami is less than your current 50mg Nort.

that is interesting

@naejohn did it. @alex7 did it. From memory Alex did it both ways.
