I have profound high-tone deafness, at present unremediable and a handicap. I have had very occasional mild vertigo. I have had trials for the England Over 70s Walking Football team, and have been told my balance was good (the only thing that was!). However, I note that my balance is now rapidly deteriorating and I am likely to fall over soon. I have thought for a long time that Alzheimer’s disease was due to a degeneration of the inner ear and hence its central connections. There is now suggestive evidence that degeneration of the peripheral vestibular system is an even more important trigger (see Previc).
I am preparing a definitive(?) article on Charles Darwin’s health, and a book on Meniere Spectrum Disorder. I will put up a summary for comments from experts (you!).
