Aborting a migraine

So I got about three weeks symptom free. Then a couple days ago I got tinnitus and ear pain. Two nights ago I started shaking at night. Yesterday was very dizzy, culminating last night in a horrible headache that I just slept away.

I started thinking: migraine prevention is pretty good but not 100%. Wouldn’t it be great if there was something I could take at the first symptom. I could have saved myself a couple days of suffering.

So have any of you had good experience with an abortive drug?

Do you suffer with mav then and been diagnosed?

Well the sheet she gave me says “atypical migraine” in the diagnosis section. So its not exactly mav as her diagnosis but I figure its all the same. The Heal Your Headache guy seems to want to lump all headaches in as migraine, so I just see it as a neurological affliction with many ways of presenting.

My question is about aborting it. I wonder about peoples experience. I have heard that the triptan’s are not effective at aborting once the “aura” phase has set in. For people who have atypical migraines, there may not be a progression from visual aura phase to headache phase. The vestibular symptoms may be the most disturbing aspect of the whole experience. And it seems with mav all the emphasis is on prevention, which I agree with. I just wondered if anyone has found anything that might work to abort an already existing episode.

And just to clarify what I am asking, I think that prevention has to be the starting point. My own question would have seemed like nonsense to me even a few weeks ago. “What do you mean ‘abort’ … the symptoms are constant! If I knew how to abort i would be cured.”

So my question is primarily for people who already have an effective prevention regimen, but occasionally have episodes. What do you use to abort once it starts?
