wondering if anyone takes amitriptyline and Lexapro together. The amitriptyline is giving me terrible side effects but as I’m weaning off, I’d like to start on Lexapro has anyone tried this?
Thanks

I take a combination of Nortriptyline (10 mg) and Lexapro (5 mg). I understand that amitriptyline and nortriptyline are very similar. You can search online. I started taking Lexapro in 2017, five years before I was diagnosed with vertiginous migraine. I took it for anxiety. Lexapro 5 mg was not enough to help me by itself when the symptoms of VM started. It is only when I started Nortriptyline in Oct 2022 that I felt a strong positive change. In brief, I don’t think Lexapro is enough for VM (but every person is different). I am struggling leaving Lexapro now. I fear the brain zaps.
Ive been on and off lexapro for many years . Never had a problem! I would take it for winter depression then come off in the spring. Not one zap and went back on easily the next winter.
Everyone is different.
Try tapering~you should be fine!
vestibular-migraine Medication On Lexapro: I have taken on and off for 8 or 9 years, first for anxiety and then for VM (though I think the “anxiety” included as-yet long-term undiagnosed vestibular disorder). I am now almost through tapering off and have had no problems with zaps. I reduced my 10 mg dose to 7.5, 5.0, 2.5, gradually - a reduction once every week or 10 days. I have a very good pill cutter!
A good pill cutter is hard to find. I am still looking. The first one I had cut the pills about 2/3 instead of 1/2. To make matters worse, the 1/3 part shattered into granules. Then the next pill cutter gave me 1/2 and granules for the other half. If the pill was large, the other half would stay intact, but the end next to the cut shattered so that I ended up with not quite 1/2 a pill.
Where did you get your pill cutter and what does it look like?
I got this at Walgreens, a couple of years ago. Brand name is Apothecary Products. It’s a “pocket pill cutter.” The pill sits snuggly as close to the pointy end of the V shape as you can place it. Close the lid with a snap, and the blade in the lid does a neat cut.
Lexapro does not perform any better than placebo as a migraine preventative. it may be useful for comorbid anxiety, although combining with amitriptyline may accentuate amitriptyline’s sedative effects
You are correct. Lexapro was prescribed by neurologist as a “possible” help for persistent dizziness (“possibly” due to VM) and anxiety. It seems to be an SSRI prescribed for 3PD also.
I ordered two of these from Amazon. Hopefully, they are better than the cutters we have tried.
Thank you.
The pill cutters came yesterday. They actually look like someone gave them some thought before sending the design to production. I’ll try to update the group when we use them.
