Amitriptyline for VM

I read many are taking Amitriptyline for VM.
My doctors said my balance issues are because of migraine, MRI did not show any problems.
I have tinnitus in my left ear and balance issue problems. In the initial stages I had vertigo and nystagmus.
I am from India, here VM is not that common and doctors are not familiar with this.
Can I start taking 10 mg Amitriptyline? What is your opinion?

VM is a diagnosis, not a pathophysiology. In some peoples opinion it is caused by migraine, whilst in others migraine is just one of the significant symptoms. Please note I was diagnosed with various things including Migraine Associated Vertigo (but never VM). However I think the names for these things changes with fashion.

In any case Amitriptyline has a great track record for reducing symptoms. It really helped me and I only took 20mg nocte at most. You can start at 10mg.

I found almost immediate improvement. But don’t expect complete resolution of symptoms. It did however stop the big basilar migraines dead in their tracks almost immediately. Those things are horrific and I mean HORRIFIC so that was extremely welcome!!

Doctors aren’t familiar with it the World over. I’m U.K. based and went undiagnosed for twelve years. Recently I was in hospital and apart from my lead consultant (fortunately) not one hospital staff member and I had interactions with many over two weeks at all levels had ever heard of it! Straight migraine yes but nothing with a link to causing balance issues.

Yes Amitriptiline saved me! It was the only thing that helped me. I started on 10mg and went up to 40mg, it took time but I did notice improvement pretty much straight away. I have now reduced to 30mg. Keep in mind though each time you increase you may have a flare up for a couple of weeks while the brain adjusts. It gave me my life back.

I take Amitriptyline, currently on 10mg but just had my dose increased to 20mg. I’m taking advice and increasing by 5mg initially and working up to 20mg as I’m very sensitive to medication and changes. I take it alongside Betahistine. I found I felt worse when I first started taking the Amitriptyline but it has really helped me. Good luck!

Hi, I’m was on Ami at 20 mg and decided to go up to 22.5 mg for the past 3 days and eventually plan to go to 25 mg. I’ve had problems with blurry vision since about 2 months after the start of MAV. Especially with any glowing lights. It’s the one symptom that has hardly fluctuated at all since it started. In the past 3 or 4 days I feel like it’s slightly worse and I’m wondering if this could be due to upping the Ami. When it comes to biological systems, many variables contribute to any particular outcome. I don’t believe me having blurry vision due to MAV before Ami eliminates Ami as a contributor. Has anyone experienced this with Ami? Should I stay at 20 and let my body heal the rest? 20 mg got me up to 80%! Let me know what you think!
