I am just starting Metoprolol - it says I should take 50mg once a day to start with. I am planning to start lower and titrate up and eventually I should be getting to 100-200mg per day.
I wondered if anyone who takes any of the beta blockers could tell me what dose they started on and if they take the whole amount all at once? Also what is the best time of day to take it? Most meds seems to say at nightime but this one doesn’t say that.
I take 120mg of Propranolol, 60mg in the morning and 60mg in the evening. I started at 60mg. I may have noticed a little tiredness, other than that beta blockers are fairly easy to tolerate!
Thanks for that. I have taken 12.5mg at lunchtime and teatime today. I noticed I have felt drowsy just after taking it. I have also noticed that my heart isn’t pounding as much as normal which is nice.
Would you recommend splitting them and having half the dose early and half later then?
If it says take once a day, I would not split it. Perhaps as you start taking more you could split the dose, like 50 in the morning and 50 in the evening. That is just my personal opinion though, you should probably consult your doctor.
I take mine at 9am and 9pm, just because it is easy to remember!!
I take metoprolol 50mg in the am and 50 in the PM (drs recommendation). I started bang in on this dose and it totally wiped me out for about 4-5 weeks. I was dragging my sorry arse around :-). I also experienced some serious nightmares at the beginning but they don’t really bother me now, although I do find my dreams are generally more vivid. It took me at least 6 weeks if not 8 to notice any impact from the drugs, but they have definitely helped me.
Certainly in terms of side effects once you get used to them they are very very easy to tolerate, although a frustrating drug to take if you are athletic or trying to get fit because of the limits they put on your ability to exercise "full tilt’. My resting pulse is about 60 and I can rarely get my heart rate over 130 - and then I feel like I am going to pass out! After last nights boot camp (boxing) by HR maxed at 120
Thanks for this. I am glad some are seeing improvement with the drug. I have definitely noticed the tiredness even from such a low dose but hopefully that may wear off. It’s nice not to feel those surges of nervous adrenaline I would get lots of. I am not very active physically so hopefully this side of things won’t be a problem.
Gabrielle I am glad they have helped you and will be patient and give it more time before judging their effectiveness for me x
Ok so I feel very weird today, kind of drugged and drowsy and odd. I don’t like it at all, I only had two x 12.5mg doses of the Metoprolol yesterday. Is this normal or have I had an unusual reaction to it? x
Jem this is exactly my experience, although more extreme as it was a higher dose. I’m afraid you just have to ride it out until your body adjusts - but I promise it will I found a multivitamin with ginseng gave me a bit of an energy zing to counteract it - or you could just try the siberian ginseng alone. Naturally this is just my experience and it could have been co-incidence, but my impression was it helped with my energy levels when taken in the morning
Jem I started in on 50mg am and pm and I would say it probably took 3-4 weeks to adapt. As you’re going low and slow it will probably be quicker.
I’d say Metoprolol took me from 30% to 75% of normal, and I got another 10-15% from magnesium, coQ10 and riboflavin (one of the Bs) exercise and a few diet and lifestyle mods.
There’s NO QUESTION this med gave me my life back, and it really helped my dizzies/ sense of constantly moving / wobbling. Hang in there!
Jem,
Give your body some time to adjust to this medication as beta blockers are notorious for making people feel tired and fatigued. You can always try taking it at bedtime if if makes you too tired during the day. I take my bb (nadolol 40 mg) in the morning. For some reason I have always taken it this way and it does not affect me at all. I did start on 20 mg titrating up to 40 over the course of 2 or 3 weeks. I am also on ami and I take this at night. I think I split them into morning and evening by my own free will thinking I have 2 meds on board at different times during the day…may not be any science to that but I like to think it helps!
When I was first prescribed my Propranlol it was to take in the morning, but then some research came out that said it’s better to take beta blockers at night, and the docs changed it to a nightly dose.
I take 80mg of Propranolol slow release in the morning. I have been on it for about 2 and a half weeks now and I think I am actually starting to feel better. I have had a few good days here and there and I am feeling cautiously optimistic!
The only side effects I have noticed are crazy dreams. Not nightmares, but just bizarre, vivid dreams!
