Consensus on beans and nuts/seeds

Hi all,
I’ve cut out all beans, nuts, and seeds. Are there any beans I can eat? I see on some websites that seeds are ok, others say no. I really love beans and I love my nuts (almonds, pistachios). If I can eat sunflower seeds instead that would be great. What do you guys think?

I can’t speak from personal experience, but Dr. David Buchholz says in, “Heal Your Headache,” to avoid all kinds of nuts as well as nut butters, but seeds such as sunflower and pumpkin are not a problem. Hope this helps.

Same info I have. The jury is out yet on nuts for me, but I do just fine with seeds like flax, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds. I use Sunbutter instead of peanut butter now (made from sunflower seeds). I also eat soybeans (edamame) without issue.

i guess it’s hard for me to figure out as my symptoms seem to get better/get worse without any pattern that I can put a finger on yet. So if I do start eating seeds or certain beans I can’t necessarily say I am feeling worse because of eating them. Maybe the only thing I can do is not eat them for a while and see if I stabilize. Then start eating things one at a time and see what happens.

I’m still not sure if I have any food triggers at all…

I went on the migraine diet (from “Heal Your Headache”) back in March and eliminated possible food triggers. After I’d been on it for three months, I started trying to add things back, only one at a time and just a little of that. Dr. Buchholz says to start by adding back the things you miss most to see if you can reintroduce those without a problem. If I’m going to have a reaction, it happens within a day or two and sometimes immediately. I occasionally eat a tiny bit of peanut butter, but real chocolate is a trigger for me, although things made with cocoa don’t seem to be. I found that many of the items on the diet aren’t problems for me.

You’re right, it is difficult to pinpoint triggers since this condition waxes and wanes. But eliminating foods and starting over is a good way to tell what your triggers are. Hope you figure it out.

Thanks for the advice. For me the biggest things I miss are almonds and pistachios, tomatoes, and beans (I’d be happy if I could eat black and garbanzo). Other than that I am fine without the rest of it.

We’ll see I guess!

I read the book and it’s not on his diet, but I don’t know if he has revised it since I have not seen him in person. On p88, it says “You may recognize personal dietary triggers that aren’t on the list. For instance, tomatoes and tomato-based sauces are triggers for some people - perhaps because tomatoes naturally contain relatively high levels of free glutamate.” So, it seems it’s a maybe, maybe not thing but doesn’t seem as hard set as caffeine and those types. Hopefully someone has heard from him in person and can explain better.

I read that tomatoes can be a trigger. I just want to be as strict about the diet as possible. That way I can know for sure if it will help or not. For me, I also cut out apples even though they aren’t a known trigger. I eat so many apples (several a day). That has been a new habit over the last year. I wonder if that may be a reason I feel like this as well. It may seem silly, but it can’t hurt I guess.

I do fine scarfing almonds, also a fair amount of walnut. Sunflower seeds seem safe, too. I’ll have to try pumpkin seeds. I think I’m okay with sesame seeds, but I’ve only had a trivial amount of poppy seeds. I love poppy seed filling, so maybe I’ll try that one of these days. I seem to handle humus/khumus okay, and tehina/tehini. I did seem to have a bad response to pigolas the one time I tried them, but may try them again some day. Not high on my priority list. Very tempted to seriously try peanuts. Edimame and tofu and soymilk don’t seem to bother my system.

Cocoa would be bad news for me, in any amount but the smallest. Think I’ll try a sip of Kahlua.

Bye for now.
