Ear wax removal

I went to urgent care today because of the sensitivity I’ve been having in my left ear and the extreme noise sensitivity. My right ear is fine but my left was so full of wax that he couldn’t see anything. He didn’t want to remove it as he was afraid it would cause vertigo so I need to see an ENT.

He said I could try the Debrox kit but it didn’t to anything, well maybe that’s because I found I couldn’t use the syringe to flush my ear out (fear of vertigo). And it was just about impossible to put my ear in the position I needed to . Also after I put the drops of oil in i put a kleenex up to ear to wipe up couple drops and just the sensation of kleenex against ear nearly set me a spinning.

Question for you all, if you’ve have ear wax removed by a doctor has it ever caused you to have vertigo? I’ve had it done before but never when I was feeling as bad as I do now so I’m not sure what to expect. Please tell me your experiences.

When my noise sensitivity was at the worse, like you i couldnt stand the noise of dishes banging, staplers at work and etc. i was using ear drops prior to meeting my very last visit to the ent doc since the ER doc thought i had swimmers ear. When i met up witht the ent doc, she drained all that crap and ear wax out and it didnt cause any vertigo. However, noise sensitivity got little bit worse because everything was flushed out and you can hear better.

Do not meddle with your ear…James @turnitaround used a domestic shower to clean it out and landed up with the whole shebang.

Have a professional do it for you !

Sounds like it was gentle. Continue to be. Be patient.

Might have been physical position that caused your vertigo imho. Do you ever get positional vertigo in bed?

Yes, you can seriously injure your ear, even your inner ear like I did. Be very conservative. Use gentle drops of olive oil to coax it out (Get the little bottle of olive oil with instructions from pharmacist). Follow the instructions. Never put anything else inside the ear canal!!

No luck with the debrox even after I finally tried the syringe. I saw the PA at my doc’s office this morning, she said it was really packed in there but the debrox helped soften it which made her job easier. It took a while to get it out, I don’t think I could have ever done this at home. Wow, I could really feel the difference in my ear once she got it out but I still feel as off balance and sensitive to noises as ever, and touching the outside of my left ear still gives me a little jolt of something. She said if my problem was the wax it will take a day or two to know for sure. I’m hoping this gets better soon.

No room spinning vertigo when she was cleaning, just a few seconds of slight dizziness that passed when she stopped for a minute.

Gosh i would never ever have my ears syringed! I’m very surprised they agreed to do it. One of my doctors said this was a ‘positively Victorian practice’. You risk injuring your inner ear because of the pressure it can put on the ear drum and middle ear bones. I ended up with Secondary Hydrops as a result.

What would the alternative be? Years ago I had the wax scraped out and that was one of the most painful procedures ever.

Olive oil and patience. It works. And discipline never to put anything into your ears which might compact the wax to exacerbate the situation.
