This research study came through from the migraine trust which is an interesting theory I’ve never heard of before…
Anyone else heard of things like, wifi, mobiles and microwaves making our heads worse? Personally, it sounds a bit ridiculous at first glance, but it could be a reason for growing number of migraine issues in the modern age.
Similarly, am I right in MRI scanners being huge electromagnetic radiation machines??
I had a functional MRI done the month before I first got dizzy (well, for about 15mins, I couldn’t last any longer due to a weird claustrophobia reaction), as part of a study into epilepsy (I was the ‘normal’ brain at the time- how ironic). And I always wonderd if that could have triggered this thing.
Anway, I digress. Here’s the info:
Electromagnetic radiation and migraine study
Researchers are looking for volunteers to explore whether there could be a relationship in some people between migraine and electromagnetic radiation. The study is being undertaken in conjunction with Dr David Kernick of the Exeter NHS Headache Clinic.
To be eligible to take part you must be over 18 and meet the diagnostic criteria for migraine. Taking part will involve measuring the impact your migraine has on the quality of your life using simple questionnaires sent to you by email and providing some basic information about your migraine. You will be asked to take steps to reduce electromagnetic radiation in your house and at work by as much as possible for three months before completing the questionnaires again.
In the early days of my MAV, when I was desperately searching for possible causes of my dizziness, I started wondering about this (4 years ago) - interesting that they’re now curious enough to do a study…
I was much worse after my MRI too, at the time I put it down to the claustrophobia and strees of worrying about the result!! They are horrible…had to seriously grit my teeth as mine lasted about 40 mins!!

One clarification; the MRI doesn’t produce substantial electromagnetic radiation. It produces a large static magnetic field, which is quite a different animal. There is no known side effects of static magnetic fields unless you have large amounts of metal in your body, since metals can be magnetized and then attracted to the large magnets.
That said, MRI’s are quite loud, and I would advise the use of earplugs.
I had a major vertigo episode after my MRI, really awful it was. I am so much dizzier if I have had the phone to my ear for any length of time, whether that be mobile or landline phone. My balance just goes!!
