What is your past/family history of migraines? If you have a family history do your relatives have MAV or other types of migraine and if so which? I’m interested because my mother always thought she had migraine with aura but we’ve realised today she most probably suffers from retinal migraines as she only ever gets the visual disturbance in one eye. This type of migraine is apparently much rarer. I have no other relatives who are migraineurs- as far as I know- and I myself have never had a migraine with visual disturbances i.e zig zags and floaters before, only headaches. I am wondering if there is genetic links between certain types of migraine and MAV, or whether you just inherit the migraine mechanism (or lower threshold towards them) and it is then random which part of the brain the migraines go on to effect.
Mother and grandmother have/ had it. My brother has it too although at a non-significant level. I stole the migraine cake in my family, easily surpassing all of them. Olympic medal deserved.
My mom has/had ocular migraines now, and when she was young- the nausea, painful ones. I never had any of this until my vestibular neuritis and then, it was like the perfect storm-- the neuro said…vestibular weakness and family history of migraines. No one else in the family has this.
My mum suffers with ocular migraine no headache, my dad suffered with cluster headache/or migraine when he was young, my gran and cousin suffer with migraine headaches and facial sinus migraine. My aunty does not get a headache but suffers with facial palsy and numbness to one side of her face during migraine My mum has suffered with and still does suffer with epsiodes of vertigo and dizziness. My brother I think has had MAV briefly and suffered with migraine headaches when he was little. I too would get awarded the Olympic migraine medal in my family.
My dad has been having ocular migraines for years, but never told his doc (and didn’t know what they were till I told him!). My brother gets really bad headache-type migraines (nausea, needs a dark room, that kind of thing). I always figured I was in for some sort of crummy neurological issue - my grandfather (dad’s dad) had Parkinson’s and my aunt (dad’s sister) had MS. Suppose I shouldn’t complain about having VM - could be worse…
My grandmother on my father’s side had migraines. My mother had “regular migraines” and ocular migraines. My sister gets ocular migraines and migraines with nausea and sinus pain. I’ve had pretty much all kinds and now my 9 year old was just diagnosed with Alice in Wonderland syndrome brought on by migraine activity. It’s not something I ever wanted to pass on!
Mom has had “silent” migraines (i.e. no pain just visual aura are irritability) for years. Dad had a period of migraines in his 40’s but they went away.
Mine are more like my mom’s–no pain. But the vestibular component didn’t hit until my late 30’s. Might have been triggered by a stupid blow to the head I took during a basketball game-hard to tell.
