Feverfew?

Hi,

My neurologist suggested trying feverfew in a small amount if I start feeling a bad migraine coming on. He said to try to get the leaves but I couldn’t find them in the store. My husband brought homw feverfew extract, it’s a liquid. It says it’s 72% grain alcohol though and only 1 part feverfew to 5 parts whatever else is in it. That doesn’t sound very potent to me.

Was wondering if anyone had tried feverfew and knew a place to get the leaves. He said to use a small amount in tea and see if that worked to abort an attack.

Hi there,

Have a look here:

iherb.com/Feverfew

The evidence for feverfew as a migraine fix is very flimsy but you might as well try it out. At least it’s cheap.

Thank you Scott.

I don’t have much hope, but I did have some result with the B2 so I’m going to add in the magnesium and give that a shot if I can and then try the feverfew too.

There must be something to it since every doc has told me to try it. I haven’t, but I should. Along with B2, Magnesium and CoQ10.

Good luck!

My feeling is that I got good results when I took it - particularly for the nausea side of things, which was really bad in the first few months

I went to see Dr. Hain last week, and he was rather positive on Feverfew, although neutral about other supplements/vitamins such as Butterbur, CoQ10 and Vitamin B2. If I remember correctly, he noted that Feverfew acts in a way that is similar to Frovatriptan, another one of his favorites. He cautioned that I should definitely take something with extract of Feverfew, and not simply some crushed Feverfew leaves stuffed in a capsule, as the latter could be unpredictable. I think most of the branded Feverfew supplements on the market are indeed a standardized extract.

Separately, a doctor at the Diamond Headache Clinic was quite positive about CoQ10, Vitamin B2 and Magnesium. I told him that I was taking only 200 mg daily of B2, and he advised to up it to 400 mg per day. Accordingly, I now take 150 mg CoQ10 and 200 mg B2 in the morning, and repeat the dosage of both supplements in the mid-afternoon. I take the Magnesium before going to bed.

I am feeling a lot better lately, but who knows whether one of my drugs or supplements have kicked in, or this evil thing is simply burning itself out!

Nick,

Have a read of this too. There is evidence for this herb … it appears in the guidelines though the evidence is not strong.

Good luck with it.

Solgar has a standardised leaf extract version. Which means it should be what it says it is.
