Has anyone else ever suffered with hemiplegic migraine?
My worst ever migraine was back in 2006 when I lost all sensation in one side of my body, I was not able to move my arm or leg properly, it was almost as though I was having a stroke and from what I understand that is exactly what a hemiplegic migraine does.
The reason I bring this up is because, since Tuesday evening I have had this feeling of numbness and pins and needles down the right side of my body and especially in my arm. It almost feels like I have a slight blind spot on the right side even though my vision is fine.
Is it possible I am having a silent migraine / aura for 5 days? I am wondering if my increase in exercise over the past weeks is contributing to this… argh… I actually wish it was just the dizziness i was dealing with, now I have this crap aswell
Hi Richy,
I’m so sorry you are dealing with this, have you improved since you posted your message?
I do get the symptoms of hemiplegic migraine when I feel particularly rotten (thankfully not that often anymore since being on prothiaden and topamax). This would always affect the left side of my body, particularly my arm and hand. My arm would feel like a lead weight, and my hand would have lots of pins and needles. I pretty much felt like I couldn’t lift or use either, and I would always tell my husband I felt like I was having a stroke. My face would also feel numb and tingly, but before medication my face felt like that almost always. I also found it difficult to hold a conversation, although I have read that when this sort of migraine affects your right side (as with you) you are more likely to have speech/vision/confusion issues.
I mainly recall having these attacks last for several hours, but when I was really unwell it wasn’t uncommon for me to have these symptoms for days on end, so I don’t think you need to be concerned about how long you’ve been experiencing the symptoms. It’s just awful that they are frightening and uncomfortable.
Just a suggestion – is it possible too that you have strained a muscle in your arm or shoulder from all your excercising that is giving you these feelings? Years ago I used to get RSI in my arm and my little finger used to tingle and go completely numb. I freaked out but my osteo assured me it was a muscular issue.
I hope it passes soon.
Regards,
Helen
Hi Helen,
Thank you for your response. I did wonder if it could be related to lifting weight in the gym but it happened around 24 hours after I had last done any exercise, I was just walking up the road when suddenly I felt a weird sensation like the right side of my body wasn’t quite right. It very much felt like a migraine type of sensation. It certainly feels like more of a sensory disturbance than a muscular issue. I can still use my arm and even went to the gym feeling like this on Friday but its like my arm just feels slightly numbed and also down the side of my face.
I have had this before, back in 2009 and the doctor was quite worried at the time so sent me for an MRI of the brain and ECG of the heart. I can’t remember how long it lasted but am hoping its just another episode similar to that.
I’ve been doing so well the past few weeks with getting out and about and keeping active and now it feels like i’ve really been knocked back with this. I don’t know why, but I find it hard to do anything with this damn weird sensation, like my arm is not my own ughhh
