I started having visual aura with headaches 15 years ago, when I was first diagnosed with migraine. Lately I’ve been getting the aura but very little pain, only increased dizziness. Do any of you have the ocular problem without headache? Does your balance/dizziness get worse? Do you have any other symptoms instead of headache or dizziness? Thanks for the input.
I started getting random visual migraines (visual disturbance without headache) about 12 years ago. It is separate from the MAV issues which started 4.5 years ago. I get about one every year of the ocular migraines on average usually triggered by bright grey light conditions. Dr S said to me that migraine can either cause pain, visual disturbance or vestibular disturbance either individually or together. Different parts of the brain are activated in each variety. I have experienced pain and MAV and visual and MAV together but not had visual and pain and MAV together yet! x
Hey Elswyth - I only ever get visual disturbance with auras - never pain, I almost never get headaches . My migraines all manifest as vestibular symptoms…although luckily I am well controlled with meds
I RARELY get real headaches, and even then they’re not the train-wreck type I’ve heard about.
During my episodes that I believe are migraine events, I usually get a pressurey feeling behind my nose that’s slightly painful, but VERY rarely does it turn into a real headache. Maybe twice a year at the very most.
I only realized I was a migraineur when, at age 42, I got three visual auras over the course of about six months (no headache and no other symptoms, though around those same months I had gotten dizzier in general).
Quite a few people get visual auras (ocular migraines) without any headache.

I’m another one who rarely gets pain, and if I do rarely headache of the traditional kind. I sometimes get eye pain, face pain, or neck pain but not crippling. So while I may feel like I’m dying I won’t usually be in pain.
Thanks, everyone, for your comments. It’s so helpful to read other people’s experiences. Makes me feel more abnormally normal. ![]()
Jem, I’m glad to see Dr. S’s explanation that migraine can cause pain, visual disturbance or vestibular disturbance, and especially when he said “either individually or together.” That makes sense and seems to be what’s happening more frequently with me.
Wishing you all a good week.
Hi,
Ocular migraines only and only when I had vertigo. Everything is very controlled now ![]()
Hang in there. This forum is great for realizing you’re not insane!!!
Thanks, beachgal. So glad yours is well controlled.
This forum truly is great, although the jury might still be out on my sanity verdict! ![]()
