Interstitial Cystitis and Migraine

Has anyone heard of Interstitial Cystitis being linked to migraine? I have now been diagnosed with it, talk about being the icing on the cake!

Becky

interesting. My urologist dx me with that as well. Luckily, it is annoying but doesn’t interfere with my life too much at all.

I think dizzyrascal (Luke) also has this. Wonder what the link is if any. Maybe just the stress of living with this condition. I got stress related stomach problems after two years of this illness.

I’m not sure, but I do know that I had cyst. before the MAV.

Hi Becky – looks like there’s some weird links with migraine and stuff like this. I developed gut problems (IBS) with this just 2 years ago (4 years into it). Before that I had never had anything like this before. Hope you can sort it out. As mentioned above, Luke also has this problem.

I am wondering if all the medication trials we go through contributes to this since some of the medications are harsh on the digestive system. And may well be hard on other systems as well. And with us already being med sensitive would it not make sense that all our body systems could be ultra sensitive also, thus causing us issues in those areas also.

I’m sorry to those also suffering with Interstitial Cystitis. I just wanted to add amitriptyline and gabapentin (neurontin) are sometimes used to treat this painful condition. Could be worth a trial of these meds first perhaps in those that suffer from this condition on top of migraine to try to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Just a thought…

Becky,

I was diagnosed with Interstital Cystitis a number of years ago…but have not heard if there is a link between I.C. and Migraine? But i would not be surprised because some doctors suspect I.C. is an auto-immune disorder.

Thanks for the responses Guys, they were really interesting. It does seem to me that a lot of people who have migraine have IC (or vice versa). When I went on an IC forum, I noticed someone there said they have MAV, which triggered these thoughts. Now I’ve just got to find something that does the trick with it.

It doesn’t really badly impact my life during the day, its just an annoyance. However it is really disturbing my sleep as I am going to toilet 7-8 times a night, which can’t be helping the MAV. I have been prescribed a medication to relax my muscles and stop me going so much so fingers crossed it works!

Becky

Hi Becky,

As far as I.C. is concerned some people have a Mild case others a bit more difficult and there are still others that have not only the continous have to go to the bathroom but also the pain/pressure in the bladder. It’s been a significant disruption in my life…but luckily with watching my diet and stress the pain is somewhat less. It’s interesting that diet and stress are also very important factors with managing the migraine condition.

Joe

how strange!

ive had ic for 2 years everyday. like everything else there is no cure, but i have had significant help from a dr brizman who specialises in ic with a natural approach. it involves diet modification which is also good for mav. i am convinced there is a link between the two! i will ask hain what he thinks as im currently in his waitung room!

i hope you can manage your ic - i tried muscle relaxants but had no help

luke

oh annd i also developed ibs symptoms one year intoo my mav

I began having I.C. symptoms in 1988 and Migraine like symptoms in 1989…so that was about a year apart.

Joe

Luke…let us know what Dr. Hain’s thoughts on this

I wonder if your whole body gets completely out of whack with this stuff to the point it effects different systems within our bodies. I know that something is wrong with my abdomen area and still have not idea what it is or what is causing it.

Hi Luke,

I’ve just been looking at Dr Brizman’s website. Did you go and see her? Do you follow the diet strictly? It looks very difficult; in fact it makes the migraine diet look like a walk in the park! I would do it if it works though.

Thanks, Becky
