Leading cause of disease burden

Hi All,

I was at a forum the other day and this came up in one of the presentations – the “leading cause of disease burden” in 15 year olds here in Australia. I couldn’t believe how migraine ranked so highly … up there in the top 10 with road accidents, depression etc in this age group. It went something like this in what they termed “disability adjusted life years (DALY)”:

MALES

  1. Anxiety/depression 17.4%
  2. Road accidents 10.1%
  3. Schizophrenia 9.6%
  4. Suicide 7.1%
  5. Drugs (eg, heroin) 5.5%
  6. Alcohol 4.7%
  7. MIGRAINE 3.5%
  8. Cannabis 3.4%
  9. Personality disorder 3.1%
  10. Bipolar disorder 2.6%

FEMALES

  1. Anxiety/depression 31.8%
  2. Asthma 7.1%
  3. MIGRAINE 6.6%
  4. Urinary 6%
  5. Schizophrenia 4%
  6. Road accidents 3.5%
  7. Personality disorder 2.8%
  8. Bulimia
  9. Bipolar disorder
  10. Anorexia

Thanks for this Scott, very interesting.

My neurologist also told me an interesting fact. The World Health Organisation considers migraine to be the 4th most disabling medical condition you can have after Schizophrenia, Quadriplegia and …. I can’t remember the other, but it was a serious one!

Sorry, my brain has gone!! When I remember what it I’ll edit this post.

But my point is, it’s surprising how serious it is considered to be but am glad the medical profession do recognise it!
