If one needs to take benzodiazepines daily, what do you think would be better, taking a short acting benzo (like alprazolam, ativan) or taking a long acting benzo(like clonazepam, diazepam)? In my case benzos are a magic pill, they cure BOTH my unsteadiness as well as my migraines for as long as they last.
thats awesome that they help you so much. who is prescribing them? are u groggy if u take them during the day? do they all work equally well for u? i would prob say take a longer acting one right before bed?

Where I live the rules are not strict. You can go to the pharmacy and say -“give me this med” and they will probably sell them to you without prescription. I have tried two benzos so far - Alprazolam and Clonazepam. Both work equally well. I suspect other benzos will work equally as well. I will try ativan next. I am not groggy if I take them during the day. I take small doses .25-.5 mg. There is no point in me taking one before the bed as I do not feel dizziness in my sleep. I use benzos mainly to counteract my unsteadiness. I feel guilty for relying on an addictive medicine however.
where are you from? dont feel guilty if it works then take it! do u have a hard time walking and do these help? xanax used to help all my symtpoms if i took it at bed time but it stopped working for me…none of the other benzos help me. have u tried any of the preventative meds?

I’m from India. I do not have a hard time walking or running. In fact, I have a hard time sitting still! The unsteadiness attacks me the worst when I’m sitting still. The unsteadiness lessens when I start walking and vanishes when I’m on a moving object like a car, bus or two wheeler. I have tried these meds -Sertraline, Escitalopram(low dose),propranolol and Amitriptyline. Sertraline used to help somewhat with anxiety and panic caused by the unsteadiness but gave me nausea, indigestion and I always felt drugged on that med. Amitriptyline helps somewhat with the migraines but does absolutely nothing for the unsteadiness. None of the other meds help as much as benzos. My migraines are also atypical in that whenever they occur one of my eye begins to burn and they can be cured by benzos. Benzos not working would be a nightmare. How much Xanax did you used to take?
when i was taking it at night i only had .25 mgs. its funny it would only help me if i took it right at bedtime and then the next day my symptoms would be lessened. if i just took it now during the day it would have no effect on my symptoms- really strange huh? its funny it actually stopped working when i decided to take a break from it. i took it every night for about a year before i knew what was wrong with me so i could semi function- once i started preventative meds i decided to stop the xanax for awhile (months) to see how i would feel. when i went to try it again several months later it didnt work anymore! very strange and baaaaad.
thats crazy u can just ask for it over the counter in india? i am in the u.s. and to pick up the rx you have to show a photo id like you are some kind of criminal/drug dealer.

Its a corrupt country. All kinds of shit happen here. However, I like this system. Saves you the trouble of having to go to the doctor every time your meds run out. I managed to buy ativan without a prescription last night.
Sarah d, whatever makes you think criminals/dealers show photo ids? Seems pretty implausible to me.
Methanol, another thing I’ve read about India is that the ativan you buy in your drugstore is not necessarily ativan.
Hell, in the U.S. the medicine that you buy other than through the drugstore may not be what you think it is. I was at a meeting Thursday in which a gentleman who works in this field mentioned seizing an erectile dysfunction drug being imported that had lead paint in the coating to get the right color to match the genuine product. Same with foods. Imported honey has been caught that’s adulterated with rice or corn syrup, and/or dosed with antibiotics to keep it from spoiling. Most counterfeits come from China or Hong Kong, but India’s also a notable supplier.

Many people will develop a dependency on benzos and eventually have to go through a withdrawal which can be extremely difficult for some people. To reduce the possibility of dependency it is better to take long-lasting benzos.
Benzos can work really well for some but over time you may find you need more and more to maintain the same effect.
My neurologist prescribes a very long acting one: Librium (chlordiazepoxide). 35 hour half-life. I take it each night and am fine during the day. Since the half-life is so long, I never feel it wear off. I’ll take it forever probably, so I’m not worried about withdrawal. On days I’m not working I might take a short afternoon nap, but I’m fine either way. I take 10 mg/day (which is kind of a lot) along with 75 mg/day amitriptyline. I went from totally disabled to totally functional. As many people have said on this forum, Xanax is NOT the drug for MAV.
My mom also has migraine, so she takes a lower dose amitriptyline and recently added Librium. She’s doing great.
Librium was the first benzo to be synthesized.

Its interesting. The Alprazolam and Clonazepam I buy work wonderfully. Only Lorazepam seems underwhelming. The other thing is the price of Lorazepam I buy is much lower than the other benzos. It seems weird that Lorazepam which is touted by people to be able to stop panic attacks seems weaker than Clonazepam. Next time I visit the drug store I am going to ask them to give me the most expensive Lorazepam brand.
dizzymingo i might be wrong did i read somewhere else u said ur balance was that of an 80 year old? i could be confusing u with someone else so forgive me if i am. how is your balance? what about your other symptoms? have u had to up your meds at all?
