After reading so many posts about medication, it seems that there are more side effects and often make matters worse. My nuero, suggested l take valium to calm me down when l have floatiness. I haven,t needed to take it yet, but l just wonder if there is anything that really helps? There are so many of them, and l guess what l am trying to say, its like they we are the doctors experiments, that they don.t even know themselves what works.
If there was one drug that l should try first with theleast side effects, which would you guys recommend from your experience.
My father was put on sertraline, zoloft, 50mg perday, and he nearly died from all the side effects. Now he on Pristiq 50mg per day he is much better. He wants to stay on them all his life, he is back to being his old self again.
I am just so scared of going on any kind of medication, fearing it will just makes matters worse. I just can,t seem to get over this fear. But facing the future without help, and am not sure if valium will help me get through the next mav.
The thing in, l have had 3 bouts of mav over the course of a year, lasting 3 weeks each, constant floatiness and severe anxiety and depression during this time, l just don,t know if it is worth taking something each day for this is only periodic.

Sue,
This just isn’t true. If the meds all more side effects than positive effects and made their symptoms worse then it would be madness for doctors to prescribe them and we’d all stop taking them. It may seem that way from reading a forum like this where people tend to discuss the negatives more than the positives.
The doctors prescribe medicine based on what the literature tells them (extensive research) and from their own clinical experience.
If there were one magic pill, which worked for everyone and had no side effects then we’d all be on it. Unfortunately we are all unique and migraine is a complex disease. It may take you some time to find one which suits you best, but you will find one. In the meantime try the Valium - it will at the very least assist with your anxiety.
Sue,
I am guessing your Dad has migraine? Genetics plays a big role in both the disease, and what works. It would make sense that you could start on either effexor, (a commonly prescribed migraine preventative) or Pristique (the new, more poten effexor). Since your MAV comes and goes, I probably wouldn’t take something every day. Unless you also had some anxiety/depression issues throughout the remainder of the year. Valium is a good med for short spells, and if it helps, I would just take it till it passes. Also, be aware of your triggers. Maybe stress/sleep/red wine/time changes etc…are causing these bouts?
It sounds like your stuff might be really anxiety related, in which case the valium for short spells, or effexor for a long term commitment.
I have 24/7 issues without meds, and the only side effext I really have is constipation…not pretty, but a good exchange for getting to feel normal again.
Good luck to you…
Kelley
Its good to hear that the side effects don,t out weigh the benefits, it just when you read all the negatives people are experiencing it makes me wonder if anything out there is worth taking and really helps. So its nice to hear that there really is help out there. What makes matters worse for me, is thinking there is no way out, and that l am pretty much stuck with this for a while. It makes me feel much better, when l hear people are saying they are better after meds, than worse off. I try to be positive each day as l think that really helps me. The state of mind plays a huge role for myself.
My step father didn,t go on meds for migraine but for general panic attacks. He is not blood related to me, so gentic make up is the issue here.
I had migraines with aura in my early twenties, and then they dissapeared until a year ago when l was 39 years of age.
Knowing which meds to try first from your experinces, is very helpfull, even thoughl know we are all different, and each work differently.
