Neurologist in Canberra/Syndey, Australia?

Hi guys,
I’ve only discovered this forum recently and have benefited greatly by all the research and experiences of all…thanks heaps. My MAV was kicked off by a 5 week vertigo virus in Nov 08 and experience the symptoms everyday tho acupuncture has helped a bit. I have been to a neurologist who at least correctly diagnosed me, however, after several medications didnt work he said the only option I had left was botox. Thankfully you guys have helped me realise that there are still other meds I can try but I need another specialist, so if any of you know anyone in the area I would be grateful for the input.
Cheers

Hi Manny,

There’s Dr Halmagyi in Sydney. He’s at the Hearing and Balance Centre attached to the RPA hospital in Camperdown. I imagine you could see any of the specialists there. Scott has seen Dr Granot in Bondi.

There’s a whole bunch of doctors discussed in this area: viewforum.php?f=32

Hi Victoria,
Thanks very much for the link…I’m still finding my way around the forum. I’m in country NSW but getting desparate to find a specialist who can help me as the vertigo is very tiring and I get horid episodes where it feels like I’m about to have a stroke/and or pass out. Have you had any success?
Manuela

Hi Manny,
I’ve got an appointment with Dr Granot in Sydney on 15th November - I have just made the appt & was surprised to get to see him so quickly. I was diagnosed with vertiginous migraine by my neuro in May this year but he doesn’t seem to know much about the treatment so I feel like I’m doing the research (with everyone’s help on this forum) as to what meds might help. This is a long list and it seems that what works for one person might not work for another. My migraines have reduced in frequency & are not so severe since being on the migraine diet & definitely no caffeine. However, I still have the disequilibrium, motion & visual vertigo most of the time and not getting any better. Don’t really want to fly over but too far to drive. (must remember to take my Lorazapam before & during the flight!). I’ve found changing meds all the time is awful - getting off them & then onto something different. It will be great to talk to someone who actually understands this horrible condition and hopefully have an understanding of the different meds to try & possible interactions with what I’m already taking for other conditions. Will let you know how I get on! :?

Hi Barb,

I’ve seen Granot twice now and he’s very good. Sharp as a tack. My guess is he’ll probably start you on pizotifen or periactin first.

Keep us posted.

Hi Manuela,

Yes, I’m a success story. I still have migraines and migrainous activity but mostly I’m really well. Prothiaden did the trick for me and Valium is an excellent ‘as needed’ medication.

Good luck choosing a specialist - if you can get to Sydney Halmagyi or Granot are who you should see.

Hi Barb,
Hope all goes well with your trip to Sydney. I can definitely relate to your symptoms and the difficulty in finding meds that suit. I have hypoglaecemia and a blood clotting problem so it can be tricky. I’ve just started on propranolol but can only take very low doses which I’m hoping will be enough to get me sorted. I’ve had 4 other meds which havent worked for one reason or another. I would just like to be able to go shopping and walk down the street without having a survival strategy in case I have an attack. Anyway…such is life. In the meantime, I’ll be interested in seeing how you get on.
