OT - FireFox problem

I use FireFox and I have it set to open each new page in a new tab. I downloaded the new version today, worked fine until i downloaded the Addons. Just the basics. Now the new pages won’t open with a new tab. the only Addons i downloaded are:

Adblock Plus
FireGestures
Forecastfox
GoogleToolbar
GooglePreview
NoScript
PDF Download
ReaditLater

I suppose i could try uninstalling these one at a time to see if one of them is the culprit, but i thought maybe one of you guys might have an idea.

Thanks, Julie

New version as in 2.x → 3.x, or just a minor version upgrade?
Not that it matters much, since I’m not sure in either case. I always Cmd-click (ctrl-click in windows, perhaps?) links to open them in background tabs.

I started with a totally new version 3.0. The older version wouldn’t do one thing that i needed it to do for my business. I wrote the guys about it about a year ago, gave them my website, asked them if they could get a fix for it. I was thrilled to see that it works with this version. But i want my tabs back!

Are you able to explain what background tabs are? Sounds like they are tabs that you can’t actually see, but can get to them with keyboard strokes?

No no, just tabs that open “in the background”, that is, you will still look at the same page afterwards, rather than being switched over to the new one.
For instance, when browsing this site, I open up all new posts in tabs and then close the current one (the forum index), read that thread, close the tab to get to the next, etc.

right, i get it, that’s what’s not working in mine, even though i have it set to do so. I want my freakin’ tabs back!

I figured out what to do. I use the Edit menu to add a tab. then i have two tabs to work from, and so on.

Next question  I know there’s a way, and i could poke around, but if you know it would save me some time. How do i make it so these tabs open every time I open the browser?

Last thing: I can’t use the smileys. When I do, i get an error page and lose my work. I imagine that doesn’t happen to you.

thanks for your input Tran,

BTW, no more Topa SEs, everything status quo.

I’m more or less guaranteed to be the biggest geek on this forum, but my Firefox knowledge is pretty limited. I don’t use that many snazzy features like saving sessions!
Re: the smileys, though: I imagine you get to a page such as “The requested URL /forum/:shock: was not found on this server.”? If so, NoScript is at fault. Just add mvertigo to the whitelist and you’ll be fine

I think you and Brian might be up for that geek title. remember when he had us all wondering what the heck he meant by some cryptic comment about 52 ? I can find the thread, i remember it got us all crazy. then he disappeared for awhile (it was during the floods in Ohio) anyway, we were all wondering, what the heck does he mean by 52 and we’re all coming up with these profound meanings. (maybe 52 wasn’t even the number) He comes back finally and it had something to do with a science fiction series. he admitted it was pretty geeky. YOU, Tranquility, chimed in and said, something like, best/funniest books you’d ever read!

do you remember that? God i hope I have half that story right. I should have taken a look at that thread before posting this, but i’m gonna live on the wild side !

Oh, and I had to add mvertigo to NoScript to even use this forum.

I’ve actually removed most of the Addons. Didn’t think much of them anyway.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (novel) - Wikipedia

Waterstone’s Books/Channel Four’s list of the ‘One Hundred Greatest Books of the Century’, at number 24. (1996)

BBC’s “Big Read”, an attempt to find the “Nation’s Best-loved book”, it ranked in at number four. (2003)

Seriously, just read the plot summary. Weird as heck but just as funny!

well, i’m glad i had the story right and i’m glad you remembered

i will read it! and i’ll send it along to my brother - of course he will send it back to me saying, he’s read all of them because he beats both you AND brian at geekiest being in the universe.

i just checked and mvertigo.org was NOT in Script. I just added it and will test it out RIGHT NOW !!!

YAY!!!

Thanks Tran !!!

Glad it works!
Re: the geekyness, I was mostly considering the computing area. In other areas, I am likely to be beat by many, though.

Ok computer Master Geek, i hope you don’t mind helping me out with another FireFox thing. I went to buy my first thing online. I added the site to NoScript. everything went well until checkout. I hit SUBMIT and nothing happened. It just sat there. I walked away to give it some time. 20 minutes later it was still sitting there. I pulled up IE and the stuff was still sitting in my cart, so i checked out that way. Any ideas?

just send me a bill, or we can do some other trade

All right you guys, (not that anybody else is reading this thread) don’t get the wrong idea now!

Julie

Hmm, could be a lot. It could be that the checkout is on another server and thus is blocked by NoScript anyway, since you don’t get to choose to allow it. (I usually allow scripts globally before checkouts and such, just in case… not that I remember it very often :D)
Might just have been some random connection loss or something too.

okay, so i can do that, allow scripts globally before checkout. i can do that - thanks! I’ll go read that plot summary now (well, after I fold some laundry)

I’m not much on science fiction, although I liked Kurt Vonnegut because of his weirdness, but he wasn’t hard core science fiction. Point is, i do like weird.

It’s hardly “hard core science fiction”
The science fiction part comes from the weirdness! Such as, the president of the galaxy having two heads and three arms, or a spaceship that when traveling turns people into sofas…

That is one weird riot! Here are my favorite lines, which had me cracking up! (I couldn’t quote the entire summary, so i only chose these two)

*the Vogons torture them by reading them poetry (the third worst in the known Universe),

Back at the Heart of Gold, the humans discover that Marvin had plugged his external feed into the policecraft’s input port and uploaded his horribly depressing views on life. The craft responded by committing suicide, which took the on-board life support system with it.*

And the weirdest thing of all is that in the thread “unknown” which was a place for us to post poetry and profound thought, within the first four or five posts, Brian adds: “the answer is 42” Now how weird is that?! And then he had us all theorizing about it  Go Brian!

I’m glad i had the story mostly right, 42, not 52, not bad for a drugged up, MAV’d brain such as mine

Thanks Tran, for the entertainment. I may have to buy one of these books and I’ll bet once you buy one, you can’t stop, right?
