Pizotifen and SSRI interactions?

“Pizotifen is a serotonin antagonist acting mainly at the 5-HT1, 5-HT2A and 5HT2C receptors. It also has some activity as an antihistamine.”

I’m currently on Fluoxetine (SSRI) and Remeron (tetracyclic antidepressant), both for anxiety. Neither seems to help… Anyways, pizofiten (trade name Sandomigrin) seems to be the first-line med against migraines over here, and I’ve heard about it being used for MAV too. Does it work to mix it with my other meds, though?

I’m quite interested to know this.

There definitely sounds as though there is potential for the combination of pizotifen and SSRIs to cause serotonin syndrome. I take Pizotifen myself and have not yet tried an SSRI, although would like to. I have never been able to find a clear answer as to whether pizotifen+SSRI combination has the potential/or has caused serotonin syndrome.

I don’t think serotonin syndrome is a real risk, wikipedia even states:
“Animal studies also suggest that pizotyline [trade name] could be used in the treatment of serotonin syndrome or MDMA overdose in a similar manner to the closely related antihistamine/antiserotonin drug cyproheptadine.”

From what I gather it seems to be pretty much the opposite of an SSRI. It seems to have been used together with SSRIs before, though. Apart from dangerous and/or unpleasant interactions, I’m mostly worried about the drugs taking each other out. In that case I’d rather be left with 0 drugs, rather than 2, if the end result is the same.

I asked a pharmacist, and was told what I figured - they’re opposites. No point in combining them.
Too bad, since it feels like the best first med for me :frowning:

I’m on Pizotifen, Sertraline (Zoloft) SSRI and Amitryptiline excuse the spelling i’m dislexic. I also have ME along with chronic tension headaches, Migraines and MAV. All drugs seem to be working well but occasionally I have to pop the odd paracetamol or diclofenac sodium.

hope this helps
