RED THAI CURRY PASTE - Trigger?

Hi all, i just wanted to mention, as a warning; but also as a question to see if anyone else has this when they discover a food trigger?

I ate red thai curry paste last night in a singapore laksa, with noddles and fresh veg and prawns. I thought it would be find as lime leaves and a small amount of lemon in the paste surely couldn’t hurt. I was wrong! Almost half way through my bowl i started feeling nauseous - then after eating my rocking vertigo became VERY violent again. I am still feeling heightened rocking today.

Is this what happens to most of you when you eat a food which is a “trigger” for MAV?

I’ve been so careful with the diet until then. It was an experiment and one i won’t repeat! DAMN MAV.

Gosh thats a violent reaction! So do you think dietary triggers can occur almost instantly we eat something, so to expect reactions straight away? I have been experimenting with different foods etc., and I am not sure how long to test them - minutes or days after?

So how long was it before you felt better ie. vertigo stopped?

Angela

I have the vertigo 24/7- but it got calmer again around 2pm. Yes i think it’s almost instant for me.

For example, i just ate some soft mints - thinking they were ok and not realising they contained SULPHITES. I’ve just been sitting down and when i closed my eyes i felt like the room was spinning, like true vertigo. I feel terrible now. Has anyone ever had this? True spinning aswell as the rocking? but only when they close their eyes?

I’ve found my main food triggers are caffeine and alcohol. However if I felt we’ll and went to the pub I’d always order a pint of soda with a generous ratio of lime cordial. I’d usually start feeling strange pretty quickly, but always put it down to the visual and noise stimuli. I only realised when I ordered the same drink in a restaurant with my mum a few weeks ago (and she pointed out) - that’s concentrated citric acid! No wonder I felt so queer! Also side note, caffeine hits straight away, but alcohol takes til the next day to show it’s true colours of effect. I can’t say what else makes me feel funny as I’ve been sticking to the mav diet and increasing my meds so haven’t felt well enough to start reintroducing food triggers to see the effects they have, and won’t start doing so until my dr gives the O.K. oh, Apart from oatmeal! for some reason I react to that stuff.

Unless I were to make my own, those foods are deadly for me. No idea what it is – perhaps nitrites or sulfites?

Weirdly i’m usually ok with citric acid - and the migraine diet says citric acid is permissible - it’s citrus fruits and juice that i’m bad with too, and lime cordial would be a no no for me as well WASP!

Scott - yes i think sulphites must be in the paste as that’s definitely what set me off from the softmints. Spinning whenever i close my eyes, feeling so nauseous - do you get this reaction to triggers too? How bizarre, i could always eat sweets and mints 5 months ago, before this started!

Hi Angela - the migraine diet suggests if you introduce something back in you should wait 1-2 days for a reaction. If nothing after 2 days you’re safe. And then can move onto the next thing.

Dunno about nitrite presence, but fermented sauces are supposed to be high in tyramine, no?

AH yes! thanks david!
