Saw doctor today ~ adding Topamax to Effexor

I just returned from my regular doctor and since I can’t take the Propranolol any longer she is adding 25 mg of Topamax to my 75 mg of Effexor.

She also wants me to see a cardiologist because my lips, fingers and toes should not have been blue on only 30 mg of the Propranolol. She wrote on the the paperwork that I was cyanotic. Should I be worried??

Hi Donna,

I wouldn’t worry about it. Given it appeared when you took the prop – a drug that affects the blood vessels – it’s probably just some bizarre side effect.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your reply and the link. I read the info and I think it was probably just from the drug also. My doctor just want to make sure everything is ok with my heart, so I guess I will go to appease her.

Donna,
When I started Cymbalta I was getting some chest pain…went to the cardiologist, all was fine. Sometimes the body reacts to these meds kind of strangely, and then settles down. Go for peace of mind, and then fingers crossed, this med will work it’s wonders.

Thanks Kelley. I am hoping the Topamax will work also. The doctor wants me to start taking it in 2 weeks because we just increased the Effexor to 75 mg. a couple of days ago.

Hi Donna, Im sorry to hear about that strange side effect you had on propranolol. Sounds like its nothing serious though, I hope Topamax works for you, it seems to be a good drug for this and many have had success on it. I was on it briefly, maybe a week or so but had a depression side effect. I always wonder if I would have stuck it out if maybe it would have helped, but I’m doing better on my drug combo now, sometimes not well enough though. Is the effexor helping at all? Did you have an increase in dizziness when you started?

Hi Rebecca,

I haven’t noticed much of a change on Effexor yet. I just started on the 75 mg. yesterday, so maybe things will improve after I am on that dose for awhile. The dizziness is still the same for me.
