Swimming carpets

Just wanted to see if anyone else gets this. If i look at patterned floors it’s especially prominent… but even plain carpets, if i look at them for too long start to swim and look as if they’re made out of water… anyone else?

I don’t really get it but Dr Silver did specifically ask me about this so I think it is a common symptom of migraine for many people x

I do! Plain carpets don’t really bother me, but walking down hallways with patterned carpets makes me feel like I have to hold on to the walls.

For me it’s that the carpet actually starts to visibly move…

Yes I get this. Tartan is the worst but towels and bobbly carpets jump and move all over that place.

I get it with blinds, in my living room my blinds are always moving! X

Lol yes blinds are horrid!!! My gp sits in front of a blind and I swear he must think I’m a nutter, I can’t look directly at him!!! Xxxx

This migraine shite is so testing isn’t it? DL if you said that to anyone else they would think you were nuts but to us all this weirdness is our ‘normal’ - someone get me a drink! xx

I haven’t noticed it as much with plain carpets, but patterns definitely make my head more swimmy. (I stopped going to church for a while because of the patterned carpet in the sanctuary - couldn’t handle looking at them for an hour and a half. And now that I’ve moved and am looking for a new church, plain carpeting is on the list of criteria. Crazy!) Oh, and blinds? UGH. I had a job interview recently where the interviewer was a man with a plaid shirt, who was sitting directly in front of some blinds. It almost killed me to look at him during the interview! (Didn’t get the job after that - go figure… )

It is caused by your brain overreacting to stimuli and trying to ‘right’ yourself. Your brain sees the pattern as a movement and then it creates rapid mini-adjustments to your body in order to adjust to the movement, which is not real. I used to have that symptom really bad. But the Celexa has knocked it out about 90%.

YES!!! Don’t go to a casino … a migrainers nightmare… psychedelic carpets, noise , flashing lights…urgh!!

That’s good to know it’s something that can be helped if we find the right med!

YES!!! My carpets aren’t patterned at home, just a plush pile, but if I stare at it, it starts swimming and moving. I have to look away. I find the same with particular cane basket weaves and other things. It it reassuring to know it’s a migraine thing!

Me too. This is one of my major problems. I find patterned floors look distorted, like they are bumpy when they are not, or like they are moving like the sea swells.

I also can have a problem with plain flat tarmac on occasions, e.g. if I have been walking on an uneven surface (like over a bumpy field) and then move onto a road my brain seems to think I’m still on the bumpy surface and the road will look like it’s moving. It’s very unpleasant, but settles down again in a few minutes.

i have this too WTC. If i look at a patterned carpet it looks like there is a weird watery mist moving around on the surface. Its really odd

Guys

do u notice if your visual symptoms get worst in dim lighted conditions?

Hi Nabeel

My ‘swimmy vision’. Issues aren’t impacted by dim light but my flickery vision (when it looks like the light quickly flicks on and off) only seems to happen on dim light.

Is dim light worse for you?

I don’t notice the visual stuff exactly getting worse in dim lighting, but I do notice that my balance gets worse…

This is very interesting guys, thanks for getting back to me. Looks like we can safely say it’s another VM symptom! Nothing to be alarmed about, and something that eases with the correct medication. RIGHT back to medication trialling hell!

yes my visual symptoms r a lot noticiable in dim lighting
