Thinking of switching meds..... ;-(

I am currently taking 10mg of Nortriptyline…started in october was up to 30mg…, i really dont care for the way it makes me feel…jittery,dis-connected, wobbly…just Not happy.

so i was thinking of asking for either amitriptyline or Topamax. not even sure if Topamax is available in canada?

does anyone have good/bad experiences with either of these?..or another med suggestion?

:?

Perhaps you could give Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, a try? I wouldn’t go for amitryptiline right away since its very similar to Nortriptiline, although some people have sucess with one and not the other. The main drawback of topamax from what I’ve read is that it takes a good 3 months to know if its doing anything at all, and it has some crappy side effects. Verapamil is supposed to be easy on the SEs and works fairly fast. But this differs for every person obviously.

You could also give Propanolol (beta blocker) a try. Good luck!

not sure if they will lower my blood preasure?..Its low to begin with. :?

gonna do some googling.

Hi,

I’ve tried a few drugs and have started taking Topiramate (Topamax) the beginning of January. I started very low dose 12.5 mg. and am titrating up very slowly. I am currently doing 12.5 mg in the morning and 25 mg. at about 4 or 5 pm daily. I am due to go up to 25 mg. in the morning tomorrow and keep at the 25 mg. in the afternoon/evening. I haven’t noticed any change in headaches or dizziness as of yet, but am guessing that from what I’ve read this med takes awhile too work. I am not even at the therapeutic dosage yet. I also have quite a few side effects which is why I am titrating up very slowly.

I tried a few other drugs that either didn’t work or the side effects were horrible for me (Propanolol and Effexor).

I hope you find something that works for you.

Good luck and take care,
Donna

thanks donna…it sure is frustrating trying new meds. its all trial & error unfortunatly. :?

Hi amaretto
Amitriptyline is more sedating than nortriptyline so it may work with out having to wash out the meds… You can just start taking the other. Did you notice any changes with your symptoms other than side effects?

The thing i noticed is i havent had ANY major dizzy spells since on the nori.

the headaches have not really gotten better. am having a doozy right now, just had chinese food for sons birthday…I should know better.

Ammaretto,
I used to take Restoril at night, and really loved it. I felt better when I was taking it but my doctor said it’s only for short term use as a “sleeper”…it’s actually a metabolite of Valium. Since the Nort is helping with the dizzies, perhaps it’s worth a change to Amitriptyline? It isn’t as stimulating.
Regarding the chinese food…at least you are really figuring out your triggers!!!
