Titrating amitriptyline

Im going to trial amitriptyline post xmas (dont want to be drugged up), and just wanted to ask about how fast one should titrate.

Im thinking SLOW, something along the lines of:

2,5 mg for 4 days
5 mg for 4 days
7,5 mg for 4 days
Then 10mg for at least 14 days.

How long does it take to notice effect? I hope this can help a bit with sleep as well as the rocking.

Feedback much appreciated!

I consider myself careful and med sensitive, and I did (approx): 5, 6, 7, 10 mg. One per day.
People on it for depression usually start at 25-50 mg and increase to 150-250, so this is still very slow.

I saw that so called “manboobs” are an (unusual) sideeffect. I hope I dont get those, especially since I already have a little of that!

Hi Mikael,

When using tricyclic antidepressants for migraine the endpoint in treatment is the level of sedation it causes. You don’t want to dose yourself to the point where you feel sedated after you walk out the door in the morning. You should feel reluctant to get out of bed (like when you were a teenager) but once up, you should feel good to go. Even better if the migraine goes way before there is much sedation at all.

I was just prescribed this but I think the dose is entirely too high…he wants me to start on 25mg and I told him I was very sensitive to medication

cut the 25mgs in fourths to begin with? Use a sharp knife and it shouldnt be a problem.

6mg to start with is really low. Im just scared of meds because of how all this started for me, so Ill start with just a small piece (1mg or so), just to make sure I wont explode

Took my first little sliver 30 min ago. Will only take 2,5 mg today. I havent grown a second head or anything, yet…
