Too many supplements?

I am taking Magnesium 400mg and Riboflavin 400mg at my neurologist’s “command”. I have added CoQ10 and B12 based on studies. Is this too much to take at once? Still don’t have a firm diagnosis but vestibular migraine keeps being mentioned.thank you. Brand new to this (4 months with constant headaches and dizziness).

If you take them all at once, how will you know which ones are working and which aren’t? Personally, I would try taking one at once for a few months and evaluate how you feel. If it’s not helping, ditch it and try another. I personally don’t take supplements (my neuro has never even mentioned it and there’s too many to choose from and so many brands and prices it’s too confusing for me) but I know many people here do but everyone seems to take them all in a desperate attempt to feel better, which is totally understandable and is fine if you can afford it and don’t mind spending money on something without knowing if it’s actually working or not. Someone who successfully takes supplements will hopefully be along to help you with a more experienced reply, but I wish you good luck.

Thank you, Miss Migraine, for your thoughts! I will certainly consider taking fewer. (My neurologist insists on 2 of them, so maybe i will go back to those). Again, sincere thanks for taking the time.

Before you stop talking any supplements, research how they interact. CoQ10 works better with the B vitamins, especially B12. The B vitamins help your body metabolize the CoQ10.

Magnesium also works better with a group of other supplements to protect against migraines. By itself magnesium isn’t very effective, or at least that’s what I found when I tried to do what you are trying, and what the resources on the web said.

I found that Migrelief did the best job preventing migraines by giving me the magnesium along with the supplements that magnesium works with.

I’ve tried twice to replace Migrelief with magnesium and both times I paid the price with bad migraine attacks that took days to overcome. I’ve learned my lesson and will stick with Migrelief going forward.

Thank you for your information and suggestion!

Hi Oliver, I have been in the care of my vestibular migraine doctor for 3 years. She advised me to take 200mg of Magnesium in the morning with 200mg B2 and 200mg Coq10. Then in the evening 200mg and 200mg (b2 Riboflavin) no coq10 in the evening as it can keep you up. It helps a lot. I also do daily balance exercises for the dizziness / pppd and take 30mg of propanol daily, 20mg in the morning and 10mg at night which has also helped. Check with your pharmacist, but the above is myt best advice.

Thank you for taking the time to share this! I am unfamiliar with proponal. I will investigate. Until I see my neurologist again (end of November) I will continue with magnesium, riboflavin, and CoQ10 in the mornings and see how it goes. She may wish for me to add some/all to my nighttime routine. Again, thanks!

Disco_G, can you share the balance exercises you do? My Physical Therapist has me doing some and I’m just not sure they are working.

It’s fine to take this combination—mag, riboflavin, and COQ10 is the classic migraine “cocktail” and it’s recommended that they be taken in combination. I take these plus Vitamin D and B12.

Reminder that magnesium is best taken at night, and that mag bisglycinate is easier on the stomach than mag citrate. I hope you have success!

(I needed many more treatments and meds to begin having relief from vestibular migraine, but I also hear occasionally of someone who has great recovery from just supplements so more power to them, and hopefully to you!)

Welcome—I’m sorry you are suffering. There is a great deal of information and also support available here. I wish you well in your treatment path.

Thank you lsengara/! I did not know that magnesium is best taken at night. Is there a reason for that (duh , of course there is, I just don’t know what it is). I have been on these supplements for 5 weeks and my headaches have fallen from a 4 or 5 (out of 5) to 1 or 2 most days. My dizziness has fallen to a similar level. It is all still bothersome (I don’t feel up to driving yet,for example, and I’m tired of “spinning” inside my head all day) but it’s not as devastating as it was the first 3 months. Again, thanks.
