Unusual migraine experience - MVA/Vestibular Migraine?

Hello everybody!
First, I am from Germany, so please excuse any spelling or grammar mistakes.

Everything started when I was 13 years old. Everytime my menstruation kicked in, I experienced migraine, which was relative mild. I only experienced left sided headache, which has gone away by taking painkillers, like Ibuprofen. When I was 16, I became depressive and had a lot of panic attacks. My doctors treated depression and panic with Citalopram. It helped me a lot, along with a therapy which lasted months.
Today I am 21. 5 months ago I started to reduce my dosage of Citalopram from 40 mg to 10 mg. A month or so ago I reached 10 mg. When last month my menstruation began, I experienced the normal headache, only that it was more difficult to treat the pain with my normal medication ibuprofen. Two days later I experienced heavy vertigo when tilting my head back, forth, right or left. I got the worst panic attack since I was 17. I went into the hospital, where they gave me Tavor. Later I spoke with my psychiatrist, and she told me to increase my Citalopram dosage to 30 mg. A week later everything went back normal. Until a few days ago. My menstruation kicked in and I felt the same vertigo like a month ago, only not that worse. While not having this kind of vertigo, I feel dizzy and weak. I think this dizzyness is caused by my psyche, because I’m experiencing anxiety again because of that vertigo. Yesterday I went to see the doctor. My ears are perfect, my brain as well (I got an MRI 3 weeks ago). I assumed that I could have BPPV, but he negated because I didn’t show nystagmus. I told him that I reduced my Citalopram dosage, and he assumed that my vertigo (which is very similiar to BPPV) is caused exactly by that and that Citalopram could have changed the way I experience migraine. he thought that I could have vestibular migraine. Back home I had to vomit because the doc triggered the vertigo which made me quite nauseous.
Today the vertigo is almost gone, but the dizzyness is still there, along with very mild left headache. I haven’t eaten for 2 days, maybe that’s the trigger for the dizzyness as well, or, like I said, maybe also caused by my anxiety. I’m extremely afraid that the vertigo (vertigo like BPPV or vertig that could last for days) will come again next month or that I will experience it before. I can’t sleep or eat, I am in constant anxiety.
Did anybody experience the same vertigo like me (BPPV)? Or did anybody experience similiar feelings while reducing the dosage of Citalopram? Can heavy migraine vertigo last for days, and if, is there any remedy? Can vestibular migraine be treated well? Help me, the fraidy cat.

You could have vestibular migraine with the vestibular symptoms triggered by changing dosage. I think you need more meds for symptom relief: Zofran (ondansetron) for nausea so you can eat, also maybe a prescription sleep aid because getting enough sleep is very important for symptom control (Ambien or others). Yes, it can be chronic. I have chronic vestibular migraine. Hopefully, once your body gets used to a good dosage, your symptoms will lessen. Yes, this is very treatable with lifestyle changes and the right meds.

I got the worst GI bug from my son last winter. I couldn’t eat for a week. I took a ton of Zofran just so I didn’t want to kill myself (kidding). Anyway, I got a horrible headache - I think from not eating. Our brains are sensitive (and really don’t like being put through vestibular tests).

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hey,
Thanks for your reply. It helped a lot. I guess I need to be patient and should relax. Now I’m taking 30 mg Citalopram again, maybe the symptoms will go away again or will lessen.
