Vitamin deficiency's

Hiya all, just a quick note for you all. Just be aware if you are on the migraine diet, I have been on it for a few years now, and I am more relaxed now however I have just had some blood tests done for something else and have discovered that some vitamins like b12, I am severely deficient in. Also have low vitamin d and low Sirium folate. Even though they are doing further tests to find out why, I have a very strong suspicion it is due to my diet. So just giving you all the a heads up. X

Hi shenay
Low serum folate can be caused by a mutation in the migraine gene (MTHFR). Having a genetic test is the only way to check whether you have this mutation. There are two genes that can cause this: MTHFR C677T and MTHFR A1298C. Low B12 can be a sign that you have a variant gene. Treatment is daily vitamins.

Two of my children have both mutations and I have one. We all have migraine although I’m the only one with Vestibular Migraine.

Do you know what tests your docs are doing? Prof. Griffiths/Griffiths Genomics Research Centre has done a lot of research in this area.

This is very interesting Shenay and Barb,

I am B12 deficient, although I took high quality vitaminpills with 7500% B12 in them for years prior to the diagnose of B12 deficiency. So I can’t absorb the B12 the ‘normal’ way. I must take shots.

Not only have I MAV, I also have Trigeminal neuralgia, a facial pain condition using the same nerve to travel as Migraine: the trigeminal nerve…
Sometimes B12 can help people with there Triginal neuralgia pain by giving them B12 shots.
I am on B12-shots for years now, but no releave to MAV or TN unfortunately.
However, I am certain of a relationship of the conditions I have.

Very interesting to read there is this migraine-gene; makes me wonder…

What med helps you the most against MAV Barb?

Very interesting. A question for you all; do you have chronic symptoms?
It could be that the migraine caused the vitamin deficiency but it could also be the other way around.
Hopefully all your symptoms, including your migraine symptoms, will decrease or even disappear once your vitamine levels are back to optimum.

I have always suspected that there is some underlying condition or imbalance in my body that give me the symptoms, since they are chronic. Who knows?

Best of luck!

Any news?

B12 deficiency is also linked with h pylori gut infection

I found that I’m low anemic (even though I eat a ton of iron) and had high B12 levels. I’m on an iron supplement now, so we’ll see if my migraines lesson when my iron goes up. As for the high B12, I’m puzzled.

i am Vitamin D and B12 deficient. I have to have a b12 injection every 3 months and i take vitamin D3.

if you on the Dr S diet then it might be a good idea to take calcium supplement.

I have to have B12 injections every 3 months, was way below the reference range. I have just found out that my Vitamin D is very low. Years ago, blood tests showed I was low in magnesium and chromium.

DMC, I have high B12 too – 735 pg/ml, which on the scale our blood lab uses here, is over the normal limit of 107 - 675 pg/ml. When I google what that could mean, it really concerns me. Something else to worry about. This particular blood test, a copy of which I have at home, was done in 2012. Pretty sure it’s still high, though, and will get it re-tested soon. Did your doctor show any concern about it?

Thanks,
Angela

No, my doctor wasn’t very concerned about it. It’s my understanding that I don’t have certain other symptoms or lab results that may signal trouble if that were a problem. It might be worth a re-test, as you mentioned, to give yourself some peace of mind. Did your doctor mention anything about yours as a concern?

No, my doctor didn’t show concern either, and my other blood work is not awry – CBC and liver enzymes, etc., are fine. However, I should get the B12 re-tested to see where it is at this point. Thanks for responding and reminding me that, if something serious was going on, my other lab results would likely be signaling a problem too.

Just received my test results and i am low on b12 too. Did anyone of you find that your migraine symptoms got better after b12 treatment?

To those who have too high values; i have heard people comment on high values before that this is an indicator that the body does not really use the b12 sufficiently enough and it is in this way sort of a sign of b12 deficiency. Highly unconventional idea though. But if you have any kind of abnormal b12 levels further blood tests are absolutely necessary (homocysteine etc) or try treatment for a month or two to see if you feel better. And by treatment i mean therapeutical doses of b12 supplements, 2-4 mg per day.
