Does anyone get help from anti-vertigo medicines such as “antivert”? Whatever THAT is.
People used to tell me to take BONINE otc and so yeah I tried it and nothing helped. Something
tells me that sort of stuff doesn’t help MAV symptoms. ???
Nope, unfortunately those are most likely not going to help MAV. Migrane-induced vertigo is not the same as regular vertigo and cannot be treated with the same medications. Regular vertigo is usually an inner-ear condition whereas migraine vertigo is a brain condition.
The ENT who actually first diagnosed my MAV (but didn’t really know how to treat it) had me try antivert / meclizine (same thing as bonine). It actually ramped up the dizzies for me! (Nearly ruined a weekend vacation I was taking with my mother, as it took several doses throughout the weekend before it dawned on me that I always felt worse AFTER I took a dose.)
If I’m having a bad day I will use 25 mg meclizine and it will help take the edge off of the dizziness, but will by no means help with intense dizziness. It does help with nausea too, so it can be helpful at times, but as I said, not for intense dizziness. And it certainly won’t help with the daily, chronic dizziness caused by MAV.
I’m on 150 mg topiramate, and I would sometimes take it while I was increasing my dose and had increased dizziness as a result of that dosage increase. It often did help in those instances.
Like Anne I’ve had some benefit from meclizine. An extra-high dose of it though (administered by a doc), was bad.
I find phenergan really helpful and take it nightly in a low dose. Not sure why it works but whatever the mechanism, it was noticeable improvement from first dose. Meclazine did nothing.
