What are your Food triggers

Kathleen,

I love your quote at the bottem about getting knocked down and getting back up. It’s just what I need to hear. Thanks for posting it.

Teri.

Hi to all who get reaction from dried fruit. I wasn’t aware that nearly all dried fruits have sulphur added and I have a sulphur allergy. Now I search the organic shops & hve been able to get dried mango & banana with no sulphur and I’m fine with these. It’s good to have this treat sometimes even tho it’s expensive.

Hubby’s is onions.

I don’t know yet if I have any, but if the FL-41 tint doesn’t help with the headaches I’ve been having lately, I may have to consider a migraine diet (just sent my new spare pair of glasses off last week to have the tint applied). Both hubby and I get headaches with weather changes. And I’ve had occasional letdown headaches on weekends.

I quit caffeine about 3 months ago (because of reflux) but so far it’s made no difference in my headache situation. :frowning:

Though it could be that my headache situation is because I’ve been stressing my migraine brain with weight loss - it hasn’t been a starvation diet, but I’m cutting back on calories and my migraine brain may be upset with me because it doesn’t like change of any kind! I’ve been overweight, which isn’t good for reflux, so I’ve been doing something about it, and maybe that’s been a contributing factor in my almost daily headaches and tinnitus?? At least the pain hasn’t been really bad, which is fortunate - I never did get really horrible headaches. A few are bad, but I can function through most of the headaches I get.

The good news is the reflux is better, and I’m getting rid of my fat clothes.

I haven’t really figured out any foods that get me every time, but I’m like go gonzaga in that sleep deprivation is my major trigger. If I’m low on sleep and happen to eat too much chocolate, I’m in for a rough couple of days. But I can still handle chocolate if I don’t go nuts. I’ve had some of my worst bouts after drinking white wine, so I avoid that like the plague. I thought more people had issues with red wine?

Food triggers give me a head migraine or ear migraine withing 5 to 10 minutes of eating them. The migraine can last a day until I go to sleep and wake up or go on for up to three days.

Papaya, pineapple, mango, all kinds of vinegar, msg, any foods with high added sugar content, gluten, any kind of tea (even caffiene free), magnesium supplements, all chocolate except 85% dark chocolate. I thought for a while caffiene did me in but by eating the dark chocolate and being fine I realized it was probably the sugar in my coffee. I still avoid caffiene just to be safe. Bananas can sometimes give me a migraine but other times I’m fine. Haven’t tried alcohol since this all started, too afraid to try.

Playing detective, I figured one out! I’ve been eating oatmeal and honey almost daily for awhile (really healthy, right?) and I decided to get my omega-3’s by putting walnuts on it (also really healthy! - or so I thought). [Thanks, elisha, for including walnuts in your list; that gave me the idea to try this.] I’ve also been having almost daily headaches for awhile…so I stopped adding the walnuts a few days ago. Headache free for a couple of days! Then last night I popped just few walnut pieces - not quite as much as I’d been putting on my cereal in the morning - and I started to feel signs of a headache coming on before I went to bed and sure enough, I woke up with a headache this morning.

Walnuts.

Sheesh. :frowning:

Think I’ll eat unhealthy Eggos with full-of-artificial-ingredients Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup for awhile. They don’t give me headaches.

Maryalice, I do fine with maple syrup, for what it’s worth.
And I mean Grade B, the more flavorful kind.

Say, has anyone tried pawpaw?

bacon - nitrates
caffeine
fried foods

The doctor talks about only American, Ricotta, Cottage cream cheese. I read his book thinking the only food trigger I ever identified was Rum. After being on this diet two and a half months and feeling a lot better (even before a new medication), I realize that I have many more food triggers. I also think it’s because I am so far above threshhold that anything I could tolerate previously is causing problems now. I don’t have the Monday morning migraine anymore. I have only had one severe migraine in a month, and I can’t tell you how long it’s been since I could say that.

I am brand new here and just found the Bucholz Migraine Prevention that some of you were referring to. I have to ask, in all seriousness, what DO you eat if you are following this diet? Are there recipes that work on this diet and are only using OK foods?
I don’t know if I have food triggers nor do I know if this is hormonal for me. My husband and I have been tracking my dizzy spells from December 2011 to current days and writing down the time of day/length of spell; was there a warning like a sound in my ear; how bad it is --mild, moderate, severe; is it worse with eyes open or closed; how I am afterward, is there’s headache, am I tired, am I yawning uncontrollably, etc. then we add my menstrual period to the table and print it out for my doctor. What is obvious is that I get the. Before during and after my periods!!

This is Sooooooo frustrating!!!

I eliminated those foods from my diet and it seemed to help. Occasionally, I’ll slip one of my faves back in small bits like avocado or papaya. Though I suspect almonds and chocolate, I’m not really sure of food triggers. I guess I don’t mind giving foods up to avoid getting dizzy.

Without a doubt stress, loud sounds, and busy/moving visuals are my triggers (the later result in immediate dizziness). Today I had two dizzy spells and one was because of a bright moving e-mail background and the other was because of my last class of the days which includes a group of loud kids who like to make thumping sounds (one enjoys playing drums on his desk and another gets a thrill out of pretending he’s bumping his head on his desk while hitting the underside of his desk). I’m still feeling tired and “fulness” or a dull throbbing in my head…

Hang in there:)!

too many almonds
too much gluten
dairy products
sometimes sushi (don’t know if it’s the soysauce, fish, seaweed)
eating too much (of anything)
too much cafeine, although one espresso a day is fine for me
too much sugar
anything i won’t digest easily (cabbage, broccoli, beans, etc.)

I’m not entirely sure if I definitely have food triggers, from about month 2 I’ve been quite good at following the diet, however I did still have milk, eggs, ice cream, lemonade and the odd ball msg hidden in crackers i.e jatz (my all time favourite snack food). These foods didn’t seem to have any effect on my dizzy levels. When the never ending headache kicked in around month 5, I went uber strict and denied myself all possibilities. I even tried going gluten free, which lasted 2 weeks. Sadly going totally by the book now for 2 and a bit months, it seems as though the change has done squat. So today I tried a bit of chocolate, I’m not sure if it did anything, nothing obvious and definite anyway.

I had my first food dream last night. It was pretty awesome. Chocolate cake and whipped cream accompanied by a cup of tea.

So I’m dreaming of the day in more ways than one, when I can walk to fridge and eat whatever I like.

I’ve been following the diet for 3 months now, and it seems my food triggers are chocolate, caffeine, wine, and MSG… I haven’t tried to adding or subtracting much more than that yet but I have found some relief with the migraine diet. I found a page on Facebook that has been posting some really good recipes that follow the migraine-free diet. It might be worth a look if you are interested in new recipes. I know the diet can be very limiting, but I have found a lot of things that I can still have. The only thing I really miss is chocolate and cheese! Good luck!

Mali,

Can you tell us more about yourself? This is bordering on spam. Thanks

Scott,

It’s not spam. I had “traditional” migraines for years and then 6 months ago I woke up one morning and everything started spinning. I then had an aura migraine a few days later and things have never been the same for me since. I went through months of tests, MRI, blood work, saw an ENT who sent me for a VNG which came back normal, then saw a neurologist last month who diagnosed me with MAV. I can’t drive, can’t go to grocery stores or mall because of the dizziness it causes. I’ve been following the migraine diet for almost 4 months now and have found some relief from it. I just thought I’d share the facebook page I had found because the girl has some good recipes on there that follow the migraine diet.

Thanks Mali,

We get hit with spam daily here so nice to know who people are. Thanks for the link.

Good info but it all depends what migraine diet your following. The majority of the people in the UK follow dr S diet (the 6’c) which excludes dairy!! (milk, butter etc.)

My sweetheart and I threw a party Saturday evening. One pair of old friends brought a drink that I won’t name which consists of red wine and dark chocolate. I didn’t try it until the guests were gone and we’d c leaned up. I can recommend it for the taste; however, I have to strongly recommend against it for the effect.
