Colds

Hi all,
I was just wondering what happen to MAV symptoms when you get a cold, not the flu, just a little upper respiratory tract infection? I am writing because I have a super mild cold which started yesterday and is already better today, but my MAV symptoms have exacerbated to the point I am unable to get out of bed again. I feel like I felt 4 months ago prior to starting the verapamil and am very upset. My cold really is very mild so I am wondering if this little itty bitty cold could have slammed me like this???

Thanks,
Lisa

During my first year with this, I had a cold (not a flu - just a pretty bad cold), and it made my symptoms MUCH worse. That is good that the cold is only mild, and hope you return to your baseline soon.

Thanks Lisa. I guess my cold symptoms are very mild but my MAV symptoms are through the roof! I just can’t imagine that a mild cold could do this to me and I am always so scared to go backwards… and today has been a day that I thought I would never see again

I am fearing this time of year. I have had two colds during my 14 months with this and each time even a mild cold tosses me for a loop with increased dizziness and disorientation. They were both more head colds that chest and it took a good two weeks to get back to baseline. I was med free for one and on Verapamil for the other and I honestly don’t remember any difference in the severity of the impact on my MAV symptoms. I hope you feel better soon!

I just wondered if anything that effects the sinus could make the symptoms much worse…when I had my teeth pulled a month or so ago and it made me so bad for almost two and half weeks before I came back to a baseline. Or if it is just anything that disturbs the body of us Mavers that really sets us back for a time period.

Do you keep a diary of what you do and eat to see if it could be a combination of things that could have caused you this backslide. Though the cold may be the most obvious perhaps something else has changed in addition that pushed your symptoms over the line or the pool to rise.

This whole disease is like a puzzle…if we could only find the missing link we would all be happy campers and somebody would probably get very rich.

I really hope you are feeling better I know how very frustrating moving backwards is to all of us…been there got that Tshirt and I do not like it at all.

Bless you heart know we are here to listen if nothing else…we know how you feel.

Thanks for sharing Ben. I too have had a cold when not on the verapamil and it knocked me down as well and I suppose I was just hoping the verapamil would make me more resilient, especially because this cold is really is mild. I could understand if I had a severe cold or the flu, but my heart sinks thinking that either this great decompensation is from this little cold or even worse that I am back to where I started with my MAV symptoms for some reason and have lost the very small gains I have made thus far… :frowning:

Timeless,
Thank you for your thoughtful wise words. Yes, I am very aware of what I eat and what I do. Unfortunately, I can’t do very much or go anywhere so it is basically the same routine every day. Nothing has changed in my life except this little cold…
Warmest,
Lisa

Are you taking anything for it? Wonder if that would help or make it worse…what to do in times like these is always the question. Feel better Lisa.

HI Timeless,
No I am not taking anything for it. But really it is so mild. Just a little nasal congestion…VERY little. I suspect in one more day it will be gone completely.
Thanks for you caring…Lisa

Lisa - how are you doing today?

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for asking. After my usual dizzy wake up call at 5am, I am feeling marginally better with my MAV symptoms. Maybe I can sit up at lunch today… snicker… My cold is still very low level and I do think it may have some responsibility for my turn backwards. I see my doc on monday and I will discuss titrating med faster as I am pretty desperate now…

How are you? Any better today?

Warmest,
Lisa

Lisa - glad you are a bit better. Doing the same here. My husband has been away in Italy for a wedding since Wed, so I’m glad he’ll be back in 2 days. So sad that I couldn’t attend the wedding. My symptoms seem to progress with each passing day. Trying to hang in there today and not cry quite as much. Just stay in the moment - I’m not doing such a good job of it, though.

Hi. I have had MANY colds since getting MAV as I have young children and they bring all kinds of viruses home. My dizziness gets just a little bit worse with each cold but goes right back to baseline when cold symptoms better. Since getting MAV, I have had three or four illness with high fever for several days and my dizziness is much much worse then my usual during and after the fever. This past February I had a fever 102-103 for 3-4 days and I could barely get out of bed, not because of the temp but because the dizziness was so severe. It took about a week after the fever resolved before I was back to my baseline.

Hi All,

If I get sick with ANYTHING my MAV symptoms ramp up. My theory is the migraine brain just can’t handle the upset to the status quo. I think that’s the same reason lack of sleep, jet lag etc can also set things off.

Vic

Thanks for the responses. I still have my low level symptoms and still have yet to recover to even close to baseline, having to spend the last few days in bed…not because of this silly cold, but my MAV is ramped like crazy. I suppose I should give more credence to my cold and not get so down that my med has stopped helping or I have gone backwards beyond the point of return… ???

I agree. Just the slightest cold can exacerbate our symptoms. Good luck at appt tomorrow. let us know how it goes.

Thanks Lisa. Will do… I just mentioned in another post that I am increasing my med today on my own. I am desperate and feel cofident that nothing is going to happen going from 100 mg to 120 mg…

I’ll keep you posted.

good idea, Lisa. I agree. 120 is a starting dose for most. Strangely, my BP and pulse wasn’t affected at all on Verapamil - even at 480. But, I had a big drop in BP on beta blockers.

Thanks Lisa… that is encouraging since you and I are similar builds and body weight. It’s too bad the verapamil didn’t work for you because you tolerated it so well. I know there will be something that will. How are you today? I’m having a pretty bad one again…

I wish it worked too. It did help with my headaches, so maybe a combo would be good in the future. I’m doing horribly. My sxs when sedentary are getting worse and worse. I just cannot sit down comfortably at all and I feel so flu-like. I hate this!
