Intermittent Fasting: Transformational Technique | Cynthia Thurlow |...

Thought I would just add here that I have been doing intermittent fasting for the last 3 weeks after putting on (7lbs) due to Amitriptyline causing some hunger issues. I can say that I have seen significant results and have lost more that 10lbs in 3 weeks! I am restricted to only 1200 calories per day but with only having a 5 hour period to eat I haven’t felt hungry much at all. Obviously it is the calorie restriction that is the main source of weight loss but I have found the fasting to be a positive! I feel less bloated and more in touch with my body.

I also started doing a fasted cardio session in the morning! I feel a little wobbly afterwards but it does pass! yay!

Hope this helps anyone who wants to start fasting! There is so many benefits (not just weight loss) :raised_hands::dancer:

Wow! That’s tough. You’re awesome. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Emily! 1200 calories is torture especially when I wake up so early - there’s so many hours of hunger ahead! Luckily the fasting as helped massively! Its a god send… :raised_hands:

I’m thinking of going there, too. IF alone isn’t touching it.

I use a fantastic App (My fitness Pal) its brilliant for taking the leg work out of calorie counting
Plus its free! I have lost a significant amount of weight in the past with the help of that App! :star::star:

I use Carb Manager, though My Fitness Pal and I are also friends.

I have actually been on this diet for almost two years now! I started it in 2017 by skipping breakfast every day. Now I don’t eat until noon and I usually don’t eat after 8 or 9PM

The first week was difficult as I was very hangry in the mornings, but that was short lived. I found that after that time period had passed I felt much better (not nearly as dizzy) in the mornings. Mornings have now become my favourite time of day as I finally feel like I have some sort of relief from MAV.

Thanks Brent and Kristy for the IF inspiration. It is tips like these and encouragement that helps folks like me struggling with weight gain. The only other choice is stopping the meds and that is not a choice as i am working full time !

It’s possible to do both - badly.

Does that even count as ā€œproper fastingā€? I’m pretty sure IF is 16-18 hours? That’s barely 12? I mean not eating from 7:30pm to 9:30am could be normal even if you are eating 3 meals a day?

If that’s the case I’ve been IF for years. Just naturally. Sure lots of people must do very similar. We eat our main meal at about 5.30pm and I don’t breakfast until 8.30am next day. Even when I was working I’d eat breakfast at 7.30am and main meal about 5.45pm. Always been a three meals a day type. Only ever broke the habit because the Propranolol should be taken with food.

Yeah, no, it’s usually 16 hours, some go further.

The video talks about 16 hours, which looking the other way is saying:

ā€œConfine your eating window to 8 hours a dayā€

Ketosis kicks in at ~14 hours according to this, but if you eat at 14 hours you miss the benefits of being in this state? So 16 - 18 hours sounds more like fasting to me.

Yes, I do 18hrs in the week and do OMAD on the weekends. I save a lot of money on food :joy:

My husband and I are 18 hours from the end of a 72 hour fast. Not gonna lie, that first 48 was rough and MAV had much complaining to do. His experience is getting worse - more lethargic and dizzy as time goes on. I just keep feeling better as I go. I’m flirting with the idea of extending it to five days. Not sure if my brain will be able to handle it during the work week. But the benefits might just be worth it. MAV’s just not as loud about it as I expected it to be. Also my blood work just came back better than it has in years, so I’m feeling more confident.

Why is it every one of these TED talks that I watch, the speaker walks back and forth on that mat. I kept waiting for her to catch a toe on the back of her shoe and go sprawling.

As to what she was pitching, it is in direct conflict with the HMR Weight Loss Program that I’m currently on. They teach to eat breakfast every day and go no longer than 4 hours without food. They require a minimum prescription of 3 shakes, soups or serials, 2 entreĆØs, and 2000 calories physical activity. Since January, I’ve lost 55 pounds and I’ve felt better than I have in 10 years.

There are many programs that promote weight loss. The basics of most are to limit calories, maximize activity and above all make a permanent change in your lifestyle.

What works for her patients isn’t for me. I’m 69, a cardiac patient, a MAVer, and I have sleep apnea. I’m going to use what strategy my doctor prescribes, which is the program I am on.

Each of us needs to do what works best for ourselves. I’m desperately trying to reduce inflammation and reclaim mobility. And my digestive system has been in chaos for weeks. It needed a significant break to heal. Also, staying in ketosis works best for my chemistry. I feel better and my blood work is like night and day. That diet does not work for my husband long term, though for concentrated periods it hugely improves his blood work, too. If he didn’t get so hangry I’d keep us both in ketosis.

I’ve been easing myself into IF for about 6 months or so. Sounds ridiculous, but I was always the sort of person hankering for a snack before bedtime and generally eating mindlessly (opposite of mindfully?), so even 12 hours was a challenge. I tried going to 16 hours too quickly and MAV kicked me. I’m on regular 14 hours now and building up. Would love to do a day or two fast but feeling quite nervous! Emily, did you build up with the long fasting? 72hr sounds not doable to me right now.

Nope. As per my usual M.O. I jumped in with both feet and damn the consequences. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the worst MAV can offer so I no longer fear it. Had I thought I was teetering on the edge of seizure, or passing out or inducing a brain stem aura I would have stopped. The goal was worth the usual MAV crap. And I had that in abundance. Now there’s just six hours to go to hit 72 hours and I feel better than I did before I started. My husband is hugely looking forward to eating. I’m not so sure I’m ready yet.

Yikes! Sounds like you are challenging it. I hope it doesn’t rise to the occasion.

It didn’t. It was uncomfortable at times, but overall a positive experience I’ll likely repeat. Thanks!
