Vestibular Migraine dx - actually from NECK?

Apparently stiff neck muscles lead to the brain picking up incorrect signals relating to balance so VRT bodies say. From my own experience Iā€™ve noticed a strong link between better days balance-wise and relaxed muscles.

Yep. Only need slightest bit off kilter and Bam. All hell lets loose, eh. I guess poor posture associated with my recent fiasco is whatā€™s given me bad lower bad pain and stiff neck/shoulders today. Feel I could do with isolating those bits for a while like electricians testing circuits do. Iā€™ve a nephew whose an electrician, I wonder.:joy_cat::joy_cat:

Yes, I can imagine problems with this muscle could affect the air and fluid paths in the neck and cause untold issues with the Ear, Nose and Throat.

I doubt however, itā€™s a direct cause. The symptoms are surely knock-on impacts as the compromised muscle impinges and hampers other parts of the system doing their normal job.

I would lay bets that a neck injury compromises the Eustachian Tube function and from what Iā€™ve read this is a semi-neurological process as the brain learns to use the muscles of the neck to control the opening and closing of the ET.

This is very like TMJD. You can get TMJD from muscle injury on the face and neck and the location of the jaw is determined by a learned process. Injure one of the related muscles and your brain can no longer accurately place your jaw and hence TMJD occurs (however donā€™t panic, have patience, it can learn it again)

What neck exercises do you do?

For me, it did not get worse before it got better. I am still working on it. My vestibular physical therapist said it can take up to a year since it didnā€™t get like it is over night. I am so much better now though! If I miss my exercises I know about it!!

I am doing SCM stretch/Side stretch, chin tucks, upper trap stretch, shoulder shrugs, and a few others, as well as eye exercises to help with the inner ear issue. Ah nice yeah Iā€™ve seen one and their stretches havenā€™t helped me much

You must do the stretches daily. It takes time for them to get stretched. If I donā€™t do them daily, I can tell immediately.

Iā€™ve a very strong feeling most people with chronic long-standing MAV might just be in need of some extensive neck/shoulder massage under a qualified physiotherapist (physical therapist) before they attempt self help exercises at home. Could be their muscles are so habituated into being tight they arenā€™t able to fully benefit otherwise. UK VRT therapist told me working against tight muscles can end up causing the brain to compensate incorrectly. All due to tight muscles creating false sensory messages. I was told to ensure I always completely loosened my neck muscles before starting exercises by ā€˜rolling my shouldersā€™ although I now know that wasnā€™t working for me most probably because of the constant pressure coming from the migraine. There are loads of older posts on here relating to the links between MAV and The Neck. It appears they can form a vicious circle which can perpetuate symptoms. A physiotherapist told me only last week how this can bring tension headaches into the equation on top of all else irrespective of the root cause of the migraine. Helen

Apparently some people have some of their Botox injected into their neck and shoulders for this very reason. Never knew that until yesterday. I thought Botox was all injected around the head for some reason. Helen

Yes Helen thats correct information. I get Botox in forehead, temples, behind the ears, back of head, neck and shoulders.

My chiropractor adjusted the bones in my skull yesterday. It will be interesting to see how that works out. All of my intractable migraines start with a slipped atlas.
